Digimon: Thoughts on the Future

Ever since Digimon video games have reappeared in the west, the Digimon franchise has been surging back on to screens. With this new growth, many will begin to wonder how Digimon will keep growing as more possibilities open up with every piece of new content.

The new movie, Digimon Adventures: Last Evolution Kizuna, is one of the latest installments to the story, that many have grown up with, and continues with the same series that goes all the way back to the late ’90s. However, the recent reboot of the series does suggest that this may be one of the last installments of the past show.

The movie does suggest the possibility of another feature in the future, so there may have at least one more film that links to the ending seen in Season 2. The season 2 ending revealed the Digi-destined as full adults, with their kids, and everyone has their own partner Digimon with them. Although it is possible we may not, as it makes sense that the whole franchise would be rebooted along with the remade show, which has made its debut during this year.

So far in the new Digimon Adventures 2020 show, we have seen many changes to both the concepts in the series and the pace of the story. An example of this different pace is the use of ultimate level Digimon in earlier episodes than the original series. It does make many wonders what surprises the show might have in store when high-level Digimon are already appearing.

Hopefully, we may see new additions such as new forms of Digivolution or possibly something completely different, such as a completely new expansion to the Digimon lore. One possible new addition could include new DNA Digivolutions, which only a few Digimon have been able to do. We have yet to see what new developments will be made in the new 2020 series, but it’s clear that there are some surprises to come, since two of the eight Digi-destined, T.K. and Kari, have yet to appear.

The adventure series is not the only Digimon story that people love. Many fans also love the season 3 series, Digimon Tamers, which was a completely different show to the first two. Although many fans enjoyed it, the characters and the story has yet to make a reappearance. The Digimon Tamers series was set separately, in another dimension, from the events of the Adventure series and mainly followed 3 Tamers with Digimon they encountered in different ways.

These Tamers and their Digimon fought any monster that entered the real world, but also faced many foes ranging from aggressive guardian Digimon to man-made threats. The series also included Digimon cards that the season’s Digivice used to Power-up and Digivolve a partner Digimon. This version of Digimon had a completely different background and origin story for the Digital monsters, but it’s unclear when this story will return in any form. If this variation of Digimon does come back, it will definitely be one to look forward to if announced.

More Mediums For Digimon Content

The movies and shows are not the only content of Digimon to enjoy. There is a new card game and a new Digimon video game coming soon. The new card game was released in Japan alongside the new 2020 series and has only recently been announced to be released as an English version for the west. Many are also still waiting for the tactical role-playing game, Digimon Survive, which still hasn’t been given an official release date.

There are still awesome Digimon games to enjoy, including the Digimon Cyber Sleuth: complete Edition on PC and the Nintendo Switch. The new card game will definitely be something to look forward to since the way its played is different from the old card games of the franchise that were released in the past. One new release fans would enjoy in the near future is a new RPG video game, like Digimon World: Next Order, as this would also be an anticipated and desired release in the future.

There is a lot of new content for Digimon fans to enjoy and get excited about, so we can only wait to see what happens next.

Long time fan of Tokusatsu fan since Power Rangers was first released in the 90s. Whereas most Superhero fans grew up with DC Comics and Marvel, my childhood was surrounded by releases from Saban Entertainment such as Beetleborgs, along with anime, and other various fads of the generation. Anime is also a great passion with Digimon, That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime, and Demon Slayer being significant favorites. It was the love of both Power Rangers and Digimon that led to the path of becoming a Senior Writer for The Illuminerdi.
