Logan star Dafne Keen reveals previous plans for a Wolverine spin-off and holds out hope for another opportunity.
Even considering how expansive plans have become for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are still a few uncertainties regarding some major franchises that don’t have set plans for the future yet. This mostly applies to the new characters acquired in Disney’s acquisition of Fox Studios, which will integrate heroes from the X-Men and Fantastic Four series into the MCU with the rest of the Marvel family.
One of the biggest complications with this integration is Marvel Studios’ imminent decisions both on whether the past movies will become canon with the rest of the MCU and if any of the past actors will reprise their roles. While older actors like Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are unlikely to return to the franchise after nearly 20 years of service, there are a number of younger stars with the potential to come back for more.
In Fox’s X-Men universe, the undoubted highlight of the 13 films produced was 2017’s Logan, which was so critically acclaimed that it was even nominated for Best Picture at the 2018 Oscars. The breakout star of this movie was 11-year-old Dafne Keen portraying X-23, and fans have wanted her to return to the role in future projects ever since. She even recently revealed some of Fox’s plans for her character before the merger with Disney.
Dafne Keen on Fox’s Plans for X-23 The Next Wolverine
When discussing the prospects of her future playing X-23 with Elle, Dafne Keen confirmed Fox’s future plans with this quote, along with her hopes to reprise the role once again:
I got told by some people at Fox that there might be another one, but this was ages ago when we were filming, and they haven’t contacted me ever again. I feel like we’re just at the beginning, there’s more to be told, and it’s a relay race. I come into play when they’ve already written and done pre-production and decided on doing the film, so as soon as they say, ‘go,’ I’ll happily go whenever.
Dafne Keen is still only 15 years old, but her future with Marvel isn’t guaranteed as the studio works to reboot and reinvent the X-Men before their introduction into the MCU. Whether or not X-23 makes it into the expansive franchise is still a complete mystery, but it’s an encouraging sign hearing how willing she is to come back to the role if asked.
It will likely be a few years before Marvel Studios brings the X-Men into the MCU officially, but hopefully they will consider bringing Keen back for another run as one of the newest mutants in the movies. What do you think? Would you like to see Dafne Keen reprise her role as X-23 in the MCU, or do we need a proper Wolverine introduction first?
