One of the most prominent theories making the rounds is that Mephisto may be the one behind the curtain calling the shots.

In Marvel comics lore, Mephisto is the embodiment of the Devil and has perpetrated many evil deeds throughout his history. Most notably, Mephisto made a deal with Johnny Blaze to save the life of Johnny’s father, and in return, Blaze agreed to sell his soul and become the Ghost Rider.

Recently, WandaVision‘s Paul Bettany was interviewed by Esquire and specifically asked about this very popular fan theory.

“So yes, the writer Jac Schaeffer, she’s a bona fide genius,” Bettany responded when asked about the possibility of Mephisto appearing in the Disney+ series. “I think it was really fun for her to see all the fan reactions and fan theories and some of them are eerily accurate. But this one that mentions Mephisto, I can’t speak to right now, because I’m worried about getting fired.”

Add to that, when the site asked whether Dottie (played by Emma Caulfield) is secretly a villain, Paul Bettany responded with:

“Wow! That is an amazing fan theory,” clearly surprised by the notion. “Look, I’m going to be honest, I’m supposed to not confirm or deny any of this. I do not know that to be true. But there are so many things that don’t seem to be true that do turn out to be true in the Marvel universe.”

As expected the ever present Marvel Studios cone of silence prohibited Bettany from divulging much of anything, but he didn’t deny it. We still don’t know all of the mysteries deep inside of Westview but rest assured all will be revealed as the last two episodes premiere over the coming weeks.

What’s your WandaVision theory and take on Paul Bettany’s response? Is Mephisto truly the evil inhabiting Westview or could it be someone else? Let us know in the comments below or over on social media.
