One of Nickelodeon’s most iconic properties, Rugrats, is back again with a new reboot and teaser trailer for the animated show coming to the brand-new Paramount Plus streaming platform.
The reboot has been in the works since at least 2018, when it was first announced. The series will be a reimagining of the original 90s classic. However, rather than sticking with the 2D look from the original, the show will be updated with CG animation. While the aesthetic of Rugrats is different, the new show will reunite the original voice cast who will be reprising their roles 30 years after the first episode premiered.
Rugrats Reboot First Look Trailer
The trailer shows off Tommy’s house, which is usually the primary setting of Rugrats, while giving a look at Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Angelica Pickles, Susie Carmichael, and Phil and Lil DeVile. We see Angelica up to her mischievous antics by trying to get Chuckie to get her some frosted animal cookies, which feels like a typical episode plot from the original Nicktoon show. You can feel the nostalgia when Tommy, voiced by his original voice actor, E.G. Daily, shouts at Reptar on the TV to use his laser beams, Also reprising their roles will be Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie), Cheryl Chase (Angelica), Cree Summer (Susie) and Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil).
The Rugrats revival series will have 26 episodes and is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The show will follow in the footsteps of the original series, which ran for 13 years across nine seasons, while inspiring two movies and a spin-off series. The president of Nickelodeon Animation, Ramsey Naito, added that they are taking great care and pride in bringing the Rugrats back.
“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience. Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again.”
Rugrats is one of many projects Nickelodeon has plans to integrate into Paramount Plus, there is also a live-action/CGI hybrid Rugrats movie in production as well. With no official release date, it’s possible Rugrats will arrive in the coming months. While the show is intended for a younger audience, there is enough nostalgia and charm for older fans to enjoy. Paramount hopes that bringing back some familiar properties, especially from Nickelodeon, will encourage people to subscribe to their new streaming service.
Paramount Plus is set to release on March 4, 2021. What did you think of the new teaser trailer? Do you like the new animation style? Let us know in the comment section below or over on our social media!
