The Illuminerdi’s very own Jezzer got a Darkhawk exclusive about proposed plans for the hero to be in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

James Gunn, renowned director of films such as Super, The Suicide Squad, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1, Volume 2, and the upcoming Volume 3, has a penchant for taking lesser-known characters in the widely storied comic book history and bringing them to prominence. He did it with the Guardians, again with The Suicide Squad, and went even further with Peacemaker. Characters who are basically lost in the publication history, are now household names. And it seems had had plans to do so with another character in the Marvel Universe, the shadowy avian android, Darkhawk.

James Gunn Almost Used Darkhawk in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2

Last night The Illuminerdi’s very own Jezzer tweeted at James Gunn with the suggestion for the famed director to use the character Darkhawk as inspiration for his next project. Darkhawk, also known as Chris Powell, first appeared in Darkhawk #1 in March of 1991. The character was created by writer Tom DeFalco and artist Mike Manley. Darkhawk has been part of numerous Marvel teams such as the Loners, West Coast Avengers, New Warriors, Secrete Defenders, Project Pegasus, and The Fraternity of Raptors. Darkhawk’s origin is tied to the Null Space would allow for some very out-of-this-world stories, which Gunn is exceptional at.

Soon after Jezzer’s wishful tweet went out, one of his followers, Matt Aguilar of ComicBook.com, seconded his suggestion, to which James Gunn himself replied. Mr. Gunn let them know he had originally planned to use Darkhawk in Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) Volume 2. You may see cropped images that hide the source tweet going around. You can see the thread in which James Gunn and Jezzer’s follower reply to him below.

Speculation about Darkhawk’s conclusion of Gunn’s sequel to the ragtag family of misfit space adventurers has long been speculated since a Darkhawk Marvel Legend’s figure was included in the GotG Volume 2 Titus Build-a-Figure wave. But the title comic book title on Darkhawk’s packaging compared to the GotG Volume 2 title on Drax’s packaging gave it away. Then, of course, the film came out and it was official that Darkhaw was not in GotG Volume 2. But with this new information, speculation and focus on the character is high. Images of the toys are down below. Here’s a link to JayShockBlast addressing the initial speculation as well.

What is somewhat interesting is that now fans are speculating about Darkhawk’s inclusion in James Gunn’s third film in the Guardians franchise. However, the fact that he is talking about Darkhawk at all doesn’t bode well for the character’s inclusion. Or maybe it’s be a double bluff? There is also the Guardians of the Galaxy HolidaySpecial to consider, which could easily include just about anybody. So The Powell could potentially show up in a Guardians project still. Unfortunately, we have no news going either way, just that Falconer was planned for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2.

We’ll just have to wait and see when the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Releases in December of this year, or when Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 releases in May 2023.
