The third season of The Mandalorian is still a few months away from premiering, but the show’s creator is already working on a fourth season.
The Mandalorian revitalized the world of Star Wars following its premiere in 2019, and is one of the most successful original series ever put out on Disney+. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have created an all-new shared universe within the Star Wars galaxy as well, developing such spin-offs as The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka to tie directly into The Mandalorian. The future of Star Wars on the small screen is bright because of the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu, which will be continuing in February 2023.
Even though post-production work is still being done on season three of The Mandalorian, Favreau is in the writer’s room planning out what the follow-up is going to be.
A FOURTH SEASON OF THE MANDALORIAN IS ON THE WAY
While speaking to CinemaBlend during Star Wars Celebration, Favreau confirmed that season four of The Mandalorian is in the works, and it will be related to the events of another Star Wars series that will be hitting Disney+ next year:
“With television, we’ve very lucky that we don’t have to rush things through into an hour-and-a-half, two hours, we get to tell stories slowly. So now, as Dave [Filoni]’s doing Ahsoka, it’s very much informing the writing that I’m doing for [The Mandalorian] Season 4. It becomes – how should I put it – more precise.”

Favreau’s comments are the first official word of any kind that a fourth season of The Mandalorian has been green-lit by Disney. It’s no surprise that the House of Mouse would want more Mandalorian, as the series has been a smash hit since its debut season. Having the distinction of being one of the first original Disney+ shows has also made The Mandalorian a cornerstone of the streamer, leading to the development of even more Star Wars content to keep subscribers on-board.
Season four of The Mandalorian could take the story of Din and Grogu in many different directions, but those paths won’t be made clear until the events of season three unfold. Clearly, if Favreau is currently writing a fourth season without its predecessor even debuting, then there’s a plan in place for where to take The Mandalorian moving forward. In his continued discussion with CinemaBlend, Favreau described the freedom there was behind the early days of The Mandalorian, and how now there’s more thought being put into building out the world that the series occupies:
“When I was writing the first season of Mandalorian, I could do anything, set it anywhere. Dave [Filoni] would read it, we’d go back and forth, I would adjust. And there it was. Now we have to figure out why there are certain Mandalorians who wear helmets, certain ones who don’t wear helmets, what’s happening on Mandalore, what’s Bo-Katan doing at the time? How does she feel about that? Where is the Darksaber? So it really creates very fertile ground for imagination , for storytelling.”
The description of the Mandalorian season three teaser shown at Star Wars Celebration revealed the series be diving deep into the world of Mandalore, which is sure to feature much more from Bo-Katan as a main character. There was definite tension between Bo and Din in the season two finale after she discovered Din had won the Darksaber in battle from Moff Gideon. Bo-Katan’s background and connection to the Darksaber was fleshed out in both The Clone Wars and Rebels, and it seems like her story will be a primary focus of season three of The Mandalorian.
No specific date has been set, but the third season of The Mandalorian will be hitting Disney+ in February 2023. Given that production has yet to begin, and the timeframe in which season three will end, and season four will more than likely not be premiering until 2024.
