PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK GETS NEW SET OF CHARACTER POSTERS

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank looks like it will be an action-packed, underdog story that will be great for the whole family. It stars an eclectic voice cast, featuring Michael Cera as a hard-luck hound named Hank. Hank lives in a town full of cats who are looking for a hero to help defend them from the ruthless feline, Ika Chu (voiced by Ricky Gervais), who is scheming to wipe their village off the face of the Earth.

Hank seeks assistance from a reluctant teacher named Jimbo (the voice of Samuel L. Jackson) for training and guidance to become the town’s samurai. Together, they make a team of villagers who seek to save their home and the day from Ika Chu. The film also stars a diverse, eclectic voice-over cast, including George Takei as Ohga, Michelle Yeoh as Yuki, Aasif Mandvi as Ichiro, Gabriel Iglesias as Chuck, Djimon Hounsou as Sumo, Kylie Kuioka as Emiko, and of course, the comedy legend Mel Brooks as Shogun.

The production pedigree for the film is also very strong. The Legend of Hank is co-directed by Rob Minkoff, the director behind The Lion King, Stuart Little, and Stuart Little 2. It’s also co-directed by Mark Koetsier and Chris Bailey, who make their feature directorial debuts with this film.

Wrriten by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper, the film is loosely inspired by the comedy classic Blazing Saddles. As such, that film’s original writers Mel Brooks, Norman Steinberg, Richard Pryor, Andrew Bergman, and Alan Uger all have a screenplay credit for the new animated comedy. Besides voicing the character of Shogun, Mel Brooks also has an executive producer credit. It’s nice to see Mel Brooks still doing animated voice work at 95 years old.

The newest trailer released earlier this month makes the film look like it will be a fun, irreverent adventure, with Samuel L. Jackson riffing on some of his trademark catchphrases, complete with Ricky Gervais satirizing Star Wars. The newest trailer also starts with an amusing riff on the Jurassic Park franchise, including similar logo text. While the story, premise, and animal cast members are clearly more aimed at a younger demographic, it looks like the production crew maintained some clever, more self-referential jokes that will keep the adults entertained as well.
