What Does The New Ranger Academy Comic Book Series Mean For The Future Of Power Rangers Comics?

Let's talk about Ranger Academy and what it could mean for the future of Power Rangers comics.
Boom! Studios Power Rangers

A new Power Rangers comic has been teased by Boom! Studios for the Free Comic book day. A Power Rangers comic was added to the line-up coming in 2023 for fans to obtain from independent comic bookstores. Thirteen have been selected for the event, including the new Ranger Academy comic as part of the selection. The Ranger Academy comic release has been teased for the event, which has yet to reveal the cover for the issue.

The Boom! Studios comics first started in 2015 and expanded the story for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The initial creative staff featured Kyle Higgins as the writer, Steve Orlando and Mairghread Scott as co-writers, with Hendry Prasetya and Daniel Bayliss as the artists. A prequel series was later created by Ryan Parrott and Dan Mora called Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers and the biggest event of the comics, Shattered Grid, followed in 2017 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise.

Since then, the creators have dived into more stories untold by the TV series and fleshed out a larger universe for the Power Rangers in many seasons. Many of the original team left the comic, with Ryan Parrott being the most recent after reaching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100. Melissa Flores took the reigns as the writer of the comics and has been working on the current issues with art by Simona Di Gianfelce. Since the comics started, there have been various issues, graphic novels, and one-shot comics released, which all take place in different timelines for different Ranger teams.

The new Power Rangers comic from Boom! Studios has been teased in the line-up, with no art currently shown. This is one of 13 comics that will be available during the event and only the title of the new release has been confirmed. The team has been revealed to consist of writer, Maria Ingrande Mora and artists Jo Mi-Gyeong and Fabiana Mascolo. Only a brief description has been included with the comic, which teases the start of a new series.

Power Rangers 30th SPA

The fact that Melissa Flores hasn’t been listed as part of the team suggests that this is a new comic line for the Power Rangers franchise. Considering the time of release, it is likely that it will be linked to the 30th anniversary special, featuring the returning iconic Rangers from the three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

This would then suggest that the theory of SPA standing for ‘Space Patrol Academy’ may be correct, which was noticed on the character uniform of Johnny Yong Bosch in a cast photo. This would also suggest that the comics will either act as a prequel or sequel to the events that have yet to debut.

Long time fan of Tokusatsu fan since Power Rangers was first released in the 90s. Whereas most Superhero fans grew up with DC Comics and Marvel, my childhood was surrounded by releases from Saban Entertainment such as Beetleborgs, along with anime, and other various fads of the generation. Anime is also a great passion with Digimon, That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime, and Demon Slayer being significant favorites. It was the love of both Power Rangers and Digimon that led to the path of becoming a Senior Writer for The Illuminerdi.
