Gene L Luen Yang’s incredible and inspiring graphic novel, American Born Chinese, is being made into a series for Disney+. The series is produced by 20th Television with Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers, Central Park) as the showrunner and executive producer. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Short Term 12) is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (both of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D for Disney+, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level feature films), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D“), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12, Just Mercy) and Gene Luen Yang.

From the photos, the only obvious thing about the series is the all-star cast. Hot off their incredible performances in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan star as Guanyin and Freddy Wong. The series also stars Daniel Wu, from Into the Borderlands, as Sun Wukong, The Monkey King. Sun Wukong is arguably one of the most famous and often adapted characters in history. Also starring in teh series are also Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Ben Wang, and Jim Liu. While the cast is impressive, the images aren’t highlighting the magic of the story. The show looks grounded, but after watching the featurette, the scope of the show becomes much more apparent.

From the featurette, one thing that instantly pops out is that Stephanie Hsu will be joining her movie parents to expand the cast even more. But even more apparent, American Born Chinese is going to be out of this world. It’s going to be 8 episodes of magical mayhem during the awkward years of growing up. The series is sure to be a beautiful blend of story, spectacle, and heart that the entire family will enjoy.
Unfortunately, a series premiere date has not been set. But fans can read Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel for free with Kindle Unlimited.
