The Legend Of Vox Machina Episodes 4-6 Review: Vampire Blades, Sphinx Songs, and Dastardly Dragons Make Delightful Television

The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 2, Episodes 4-6 are filled with fantasy adventure, emotion, and magic.

The Legend Of Vox Machina is an adaptation of a Critical Role Dungeons & Dragons campaign. It sometimes diverges from the source material, but the show retains the same actors who participated in the campaign. Season 2 of the series is currently airing on Amazon Prime Video. 3 new episodes are released each week.

The Legend Of Vox Machina follows a 30-minute format, with episodes usually running for 24-25 minutes. The 3-episode blocks make for roughly an hour of adult animation. That weekly hour should be on the top of every fantasy fan’s watchlist right now.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA & THE CURSE OF POWER

The battles are epic and unforgettable and the character bonds are beautiful. On top of that, The Legend Of Vox Machina is routinely laugh-out-loud hilarious. Season 2 tells the story of Vox Machina, as they set out to save the world from the Chroma Conclave. This ragtag band of misfits and outcasts seem ill-equipped to take an a dragon’s alliance. But through bravery, courage, and some powerful, mystical artifacts, Vox Machina might just save the day.

The first Season was heavily focused on the story of Percy, a nobleman whose family was slaughtered by vampires. They took his home of Whitestone and reigned for years. Percy worked with the rest of Vox Machina to defeat the bloodsuckers. Along the way, he expelled a demon from within, a demon connected to his unique firearm.

That specific weapon was destroyed, and the demon seemingly perished with it. As the entire story seemed to be a metaphor for the dangers of gun violence, it’s strange that Percy is using a gun again, with no consequences this time. The Legend Of Vox Machina pokes fun at Percy’s flammability on multiple occasions. While I still adore Percy, his arc in Season 2 is hazy at best so far.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA S2  KEEPS BRINGING THE MAGIC

Grog Strongjaw is another member of the team with a storyline centered on a cursed weapon. Grog took the vampiric blade of Percy’s enemy, Sylas Briarwood. It grants the warrior increased strength and a berserker rage at times. But the blade craves blood, and it will do anything to feast.

Grog is such a sweet doofus that he fails to realize the danger the blade possesses. Even after a vision of Vox Machina falling to his weapon, Grog does not cast it aside. His folly puts the life of his closest friend in jeopardy.

The scene where Grog wounds Pike is emotionally intense and acted to perfection. The pain that Grog feels once he realizes the horrible thing he’s done is palpable.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA: SCANLAND’S SORROW SAVES THE DAY

The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 2, Episode 3 ended in a similar fashion. Instead of Pike’s life, it was Vex who hung in the balance. The story of Vex and Vax to new heights in the following episodes. The bond between these siblings and even their bear “Trinket” are blossoming, even as they face death itself. I expect that similar growth is just around the corner for Grog and Pike, but only time will tell.

Romance is another part of The Legend Of Vox Machina which has been tacked on, to the point where it almost feels tacked on. Love interests change and come into frame without ever really taking the spotlight. Season 2 still has 6 more episodes to come. A stronger focus on the romantic angle of Vox Machina would greatly benefit the show.

Scanlan Shorthand finally gets his time to shine with a story that sets up that very thing. His musical stylings reveal an emotionally vulnerable, lonely man looking for love. This revelation leads to a heartfelt connection with an old Sphinx. Their friendship is cut tragically short when a venomous Dragon from the Chroma Conclave comes to battle Vox Machina and the Sphinx.

The visual design of The Legend Of Vox Machina is everything I hope for in a fantasy epic. Their world is bold, bright, and immersive. Every episode takes you on a journey to a far-away land filled with heroism, adventure and magic. What more can you ask for at the end of the day?
