The Game of Thrones prequel spinoff series, House of the Dragon, was a giant hit when it debuted on HBO last year. The show was already a huge ratings hit after the premiere, leading to a very quick renewal by HBO. Now, fans are wanting to know when they can expect the second season to drop. Thanks to HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys while speaking to Variety, we finally have a release window for the new season.
While Bloys wouldn’t get into specifics, he indicated that the show won’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy Award season.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 2 UNLIKELY TO DROP UNTIL LATER IN 2024
The 2024 Emmy Award period eligibility will end on May 31, 2024. So it’s unlikely the show will return until summer 2024 at the earliest. So, that means that it will be a bit of a wait until fans can witness more of the ongoing House Targaryen war which kicks off in the first season. The first season of House of the Dragon debuted on HBO in August 2022 and ran for 10 episodes until October 2022.

Speaking on the franchise and potential spinoffs Bloys expressed that having the best script is the most important priority than rushing the show out sooner. Bloys stated, “My philosophy is a good script is number one priority. I am not doing it based on wanting to have one a year, two a year. I want to do it based on the scripts that we’re excited about.”
Bloys also noted that they took their time to get House of the Dragon as their follow-up to Game of Thrones in the first place. This included developing multiple shows and scripts and shooting a pilot until House of the Dragon emerged. Bloys continued, “Remember to get House of the Dragon following up from Game of Thrones, we developed a lot of shows, shot a pilot, developed a bunch of scripts and we got House of the Dragon.”
Speaking on the development process for another potential Game of Thrones spinoff, Bloys continued, “To do that again is going to take the same amount of effort. You have to develop a lot of things, try things. You never know what’s going to work. So we’re currently doing that. I’m not opposed to any number of shows. There’s probably a natural limit to how many fans want, but I’m open to any as long as we feel really good about the scripts and the prospects for a series.”
The process for the first season of House of the Dragon paid off, as it delivered another gigantic hit for HBO. The series is based on Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon by author George R.R. Martin from his series, A Song of Ice & Fire. The show follows the rise and downfall of the Targaryen dynasty, a family of dragonlords that managed to survive of the Doom of Valyria. The show is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Besides House of the Dragon, HBO has reportedly put multiple Game of Thrones franchise spinoffs in development. Those include a Jon Snow sequel series. HBO has not yet made another spinoff series official other than the next season of House of the Dragon.
The first season of House of the Dragon is available to stream now on HBO Max. The second season is currently in the works and does not yet have an official release date, but it will likely drop sometime later in 2024.
