HAUNTED MANSION TRAILER BRINGS THE THEME PARK TO LIFE
The new reimagining of the theme park ride stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, and Dan Levy. It also features Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota and Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost.
From director Justin Simien, the new film follows a woman (Dawson) and her son, who enlist a motley crew of spiritual experts and ghost hunters to rid their home of supernatural spirits. It’s also produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, with Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman executive producing the project.
The new trailer offers some new glimpses of The Hatbox Ghost, who appears to be the central villain haunting the main characters. It also looks like a lot of care was given to adapt the rooms, imagery, and famous locales from the theme park ride in a way that hues much more faithful than the 2003 film adaptation, The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy.
This also looks to be a bit of a supernatural horror comedy that will have some actual scares and chills. It appears the movie will have more of a scary edge than the 2003 film. Hopefully, the “Grim Grinning Ghosts” song will also be featured in the film. There’s also a bit of Jamie Lee Curtis in the trailer as Madame Leota.

Also, Tiffany Haddish’s character looks like she’s levitated out of the house in a chair that resembles the carts for riders of the original theme park attraction. The mansion itself looks like it will be an integral “character” in the process of telling the story.
Disney has not had a lot of success where adapting their theme park attractions to films is concerned, outside of Pirates of the Caribbean. Perhaps this could be the start of a new era and change for Disney adapting theme park attractions into films since it looks promising so far.
The same cannot be said for the 2003 film, which was savaged by critics and underperformed at the box office, making only $75 million domestically and $182 million worldwide off of a $90 million+ budget.
In addition to the new trailer, Disney also revealed the film’s latest one-sheet poster:

Simien is directing the film from a script by Katie Dippold. Haunted Mansion will be hitting theaters on July 28.
