This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn’t exist.
The latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels, is just around the corner. Written and directed by Nia DaCosta with a screenplay written by Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells, the movie will unite Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) for the first time, after the latter characters played an integral part in Phase Four’s development.
The movie will seemingly tackle what the end credits scene of Ms. Marvel teased. Every time the characters use their powers, they switch places with each other, leading to massive amounts of confusion among the three. While not much is currently known about the plot of the movie, it is set to continue after the events of Marvel’s Secret Invasion, which is currently airing on Disney+ every Wednesday.

NEW IMAGES FROM THE MARVELS TEASE A MIND-BENDING MCU ADVENTURE
Via Entertainment Weekly, new photos were released in anticipation of the movie’s release, alongside an interview with Larson, Vellani, and Parris, which was conducted before the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The images tease brand-new suits for the three heroes alongside a better look at some of the movie’s side characters. Check them out below:
Here, we have a look at Carol Danvers’s brand-new suit and Monica Rambeau’s Photon suit. Rambeau gained her superpowers during the events of WandaVision but did not have a suit. The post-credit scene teased her going to space to meet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), which might have caused her to gain a suit off-screen.
Here is Carol Danvers in her classic Captain Marvel suit, but the interesting aspect of this image is the Skrulls in the background. Has Nick Fury found them a new home at the end of Secret Invasion?
Monica Rambeau with her photon powers! In WandaVision, the latter episodes saw Rambeau learn how to use her powers and discover some of the abilities she didn’t know she had. Now, with many years passed, how has she improved?
Kamala Khan is still a Carol Danvers superfan! Now that she has honed in her bangles, how will she react when she is unwillingly thwarted in the middle of Captain Marvel’s world?
Director Nia DaCosta is known for having helmed 2018’s Little Woods and the 2021 reboot of Candyman, with the latter also starring Parris as the female lead. She also directed Ms. Marvel‘s post-credits scene, which saw Kamala Khan switch places with Carol Danvers.
Compared to the first trailer, here’s a better look at Zawe Ashton’s Dar-Benn. She is rumored to be the film’s main villain, holding an Accuser’s hammer and leading the Kree to reclaim her homeland.
Goose is back! The fan-favorite Flerken will surely be a highlight of the upcoming crossover event, and it already teased its dynamic alongside Kamala Khan in the first trailer.
This will undoubtedly be a team-up for the ages, as not only is Kamala Khan a Carol Danvers superfan, but Iman Vellani herself loves Captain Marvel and Brie Larson (although not so much the 2019 movie, per her Letterboxd review).
And here’s Nick Fury, who seemingly goes back on S.A.B.E.R. after the events of Secret Invasion. The bigger question at play is what his role will be in the movie, and how will the last two episodes of Secret Invasion have massive repercussions for the rest of the MCU and The Marvels’ story as a whole?
Everything We Know About The Marvels
While not much is known about the plot of The Marvels, the movie will surely expand upon the Kree/Skrull war, which could be teased during the last two episodes of Secret Invasion. Time will tell how much repercussions will Fury’s adventure on Earth with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) have on The Marvels, but they will surely be interlinked.
Aside from Larson, Vellani, Parris, Ashton, and Jackson, The Marvels will also star Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Daniel Ings, and Shamier Anderson in undisclosed roles. Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, Lashana Lynch, and Randall Park are set to reprise their respective MCU roles as Muneeba Khan, Yusuf Khan, Aamir Khan, Maria Rambeau, and Jimmy Woo.
The Marvels is set to release exclusively in theatres on November 10. It was previously scheduled to drop in July 2023.
