Brie Larson Reportedly Mulling Departing Captain Marvel Role Due To Negative Backlash

Due to the constant negative backlash, Brie Larson has "grew disillusioned" in portraying the heroic character, Captain Marvel.
Brie Larson - The Marvels

Brie Larson first took on the role of Carol Danvers in 2019’s Phase 3 film Captain Marvel. Ever since the release of the film, Larson has faced toxic backlash from fans. The actress has a successful long-standing career but when it came to her portrayal as the super-heroine, toxic Marvel fans have gone to social media platforms to try to tear down Larson. It looks like with many years of battling against these fans, Larson doesn’t look too happy in dealing with this negative backlash.

A new book indicates that Brie Larson grew disillusioned with her work in the MCU due to the fan backlash from her casting and performance.

According to the recently released MCU book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, author Joanna Robinson revealed that Larson didn’t seem too happy in working with Marvel Studios. The book featured the following excerpt:

“The future of those Marvel icons was unclear. The departure of franchise anchors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson had already taken its toll, as had the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, but other MCU stalwarts were heading for the exits. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland.”

Larson has previously spoken about the backlash she has received, stating that she doesn’t have time for it. The actress reportedly stated, “The things that I have extra time to really look at are, like, Am I eating healthy food? Am I drinking water? Am I meditating? Have I called my mom today?” Later on, when asked about returning after the upcoming sequel The Marvels, she responded with “Does anyone want me to do it again?”.

SUPPORT FROM HER CO-STARS

Nick Fury actor Samuel L. Jackson has stepped up to defend his co-star by stating that no amount of hatred can tear down the actress. The two of them became close friends while filming Larson’s directorial debut Unicorn Store. In an interview with Rolling Stone recalled when Larson consulted him about accepting the leading role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

“When she got Captain Marvel, she called me and was like, ‘They want me in the Marvel Universe. Should I do it?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah! Let’s do it!’ She’s not going to let any of that stuff destroy her. These incel dudes who hate strong women, or the fact that she’s a feminist who has an opinion and expressed it? Everybody wants people to be who they want them to be. She is who she is, and she’s genuinely that.”

Ms. Marvel actress, Iman Vellani who co-stars alongside Larson in the upcoming sequel is the first pupil to be mentored by Larson in the MCU. Vellani has spoken fondly of the actress, stating that Larson was like an older sister to her. “I think she’s really taught me a lot about how to take care of myself and the importance of self-care mentally and physically, and I really value our friendship.”

Larson once said that the comic book connection between Kamala Khan/ Ms. Marvel and Carol Danvers/ Captain Marvel was a big part of wanting to play Captain Marvel in the first place. There has been no official word if Larson will be leaving the franchise but with the support of her co-stars, that could be key for her to stick around, even if there are Marvel fans who don’t want her to take on the titular character.

Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Samuel L, Jackson, Teyonah Parris, and Zawe Ashton are set to be seen in the upcoming anticipated film The Marvels which is set to be released on November 10. Tickets are available now.
