Cody Rhodes Talks About Being In A Match His Father Created And Not Being A Weak Link

Code Rhodes gets personal about his father's legacy and doing right by him.

Cody Rhodes talks about being in a match type his father, Dusty Rhodes, created, WarGames match.

It has never been a secret that Cody is Dusty’s son.  WWE would occasionally mention it from time to time before Cody left WWE.  However, since Cody returned to WWE in 2022 it has been a major part of his story.

On Nov. 25 WWE will hold Survivor Series: WarGames.  On a recent episode of Busted Open, Cody talked about being involved in a match type his late father created.

“I really want to almost, like, wax poetic about it in terms of how it’s Dusty’s and it was his creation. But everything is, like, coming up Dusty these days. I’ve told people this before. I thought as time went on and, you know, I got older, they would know less, but he’s just everything. He touched everything, especially on the way out.

So to be able to do this is great, but I can’t think of it in that sense because really I’m thinking about the match itself, what Hunter, Triple H, has changed [about] the match, and if there is anybody who had the right to change the match, it was him because of Dusty and his relationship.”

Cody is trying to live up to Dusty’s legacy while also creating his own.  Dusty was one of the top babyfaces during his prime in the ‘70s and ‘80s.  He eventually transitioned into the booker for Jim Crockett Promotions and later WCW.

Dusty eventually became heavily involved in NXT and was a very important part in creating some of the top stars in WWE which passed through NXT.  In 2015 Dusty died, but left behind his huge contributions to WWE and to wrestling as a whole.

One of the contributions Dusty left behind was a match he created and WWE has been using for the last few years, WarGames.  WWE originally only used it in NXT, but has brought it up to the main roster.  It has replaced the Survivor Series tag match type.

Cody is trying to not let the idea of being a part of his “father’s match” distract him.  He still has a match to wrestle and is worried about not being the weak link.

“But I don’t want to be the weak link in this thing. Everyone who watches WarGames [match] knows that there’s a weak link, and there’s always somebody who’s standing out. Back in the day, it was a little obvious. You see J.J. Dillon there and you know, ‘He’s the one they gotta protect.’ But these guys I’m in there with, some of them have WarGames experience, so I’m really following that lead.”

Two Dangerous Teams

Cody has his work cut out for him because The Judgement Day has been extremely dominant.  With the ending of Raw this week and Drew McIntyre hitting Jey Uso with a Claymore Kick, his position is up in the air.  McIntyre could be the newest member of The Judgement Day and what a force he would be for them.

Cody came back to the WWE with a ton of steam.  He took all that steam and momentum and ran straight into a brick wall in the form of Roman Reigns.  The two men faced off at this past WrestleMania.  Cody was expected and hoped to have won the match, but that didn’t happen.

Since then Cody had to reevaluate his position in WWE.  However, he hasn’t given up and has become more focused and more dangerous.  Nothing has shown how dangerous he is than his wins over Brock Lesnar.

Cody talked about what a blessing in disguise his loss to Reigns was.

“In my mind, I had visualized a big, grand finale at WrestleMania 39 and [that] didn’t happen,” Rhodes said. “And when it didn’t happen, I’m not going to say I’m grateful for the loss, but I’ll say that it took me down a road that I really wasn’t anticipating. That being, three, not one, but three matches with Brock Lesnar and being able to pull that out.”

Cody Rhodes has a huge match coming up at Survivor Series: WarGames.  However, he still has another week to survive and one more Raw.

Do you think Cody’s team will win the WarGames match?  Does Cody have to be the one to win the match because it was Dusty who created it?  Out of Cody’s team, who do you think is the weak link?  Where do you think McIntyre’s allegiances lie?  Should he join Judgement Day?  Let us know on social media what you have thought of Cody Rhodes post his WrestleMania loss.
