In a revealing slip, Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, may have just confirmed a major casting scoop for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Steven Yeun, widely recognized for his role as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead, is set to portray the powerful Marvel character, Sentry, in the upcoming MCU movie, Thunderbolts.

The Accidental Sentry Revelation

Robert Kirkman

During an appearance on David Finch’s YouTube show, Kirkman, who is also behind the creation of The Walking Dead, inadvertently let slip that Yeun is gearing up to play Sentry. He recounted a conversation with Yeun about a costume fitting for the character, noting Yeun’s amusement at the costume’s color scheme, which inadvertently mirrored that of his character in Invincible. This casual revelation has sparked excitement and speculation among fans and industry observers alike.

[Steven] called me, he went in for a costume fitting…I hope I’m not… I don’t think this is a spoiler, or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe, we’ll see. He told me, ‘Uh, I just came back from a costume fitting for the Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that are yellow and blue.’ He was at the costume fitting and was like ‘Aw crap, I forgot Invincible was yellow and blue!’

Yeun’s Superhero Pedigree

Beyond The Walking Dead, Yeun is no stranger to the superhero genre. He currently voices Mark Grayson in Amazon Prime’s animated adaptation of Kirkman’s Invincible. With the show’s success and its renewal for additional seasons, Yeun has already showcased his ability to bring comic book characters to life. His experience in voicing a character with significant powers in Invincible positions him well for the transition to a live-action superhero role in the MCU.

The casting of Steven Yeun as Marvel’s Golden Man is seen as a masterstroke. Yeun, who rose to fame with his portrayal in The Walking Dead, has demonstrated a charisma that could lend depth to the complex character of Sentry. Sentry, a.k.a. Robert Reynolds, is a character with immense power and a multifaceted personality, making the role a challenging and intriguing prospect for any actor.

Thunderbolts: A New Direction for the MCU

Thunderbolts

Thunderbolts is shaping up to be a significant addition to the MCU. Often compared to Marvel’s version of the Suicide Squad, the film will feature an ensemble of morally ambiguous characters, including Yelena Belova as the new Black Widow and Bucky Barnes. The introduction of the all-powerful hero, especially portrayed by Yeun, adds an exciting dimension to the film, promising a blend of high-stakes action and character-driven storytelling.

With Sentry’s immense power and complex backstory, Yeun’s role is unlikely to be confined to just Thunderbolts. Fans can expect his character to have a more extended presence in the MCU, potentially spanning multiple films or series. However, as other studios have proven, it is hard to center a movie on an all-powerful superhero, so a solo film is less likely. Also, story-wise, the best way to show how unstoppable a threat or bad guy is, is for them to off the good guy’s ultimate weapon.

Awaiting Official Confirmation

Kevin Feige

As of now, neither Steven Yeun nor Marvel Studios have officially commented on Kirkman’s statements regarding Sentry’s casting. However, the anticipation is high, and fans eagerly await official confirmation.

The introduction of Sentry to the MCU, particularly in a film like Thunderbolts, marks an exciting time for Marvel fans. Steven Yeun’s potential involvement only heightens the anticipation for what promises to be a thrilling and dynamic addition to the MCU’s ever-expanding narrative.

Things will be made absolutely certain when Thunderbolts releases on July 25, 2025.
