Basically, it looks like Shadow is going to have some very familiar gear for the upcoming film, including his trademark gloves and shoes. It looks like Sonic will have his work cut out for him if he faces Shadow the Hedgehog in the upcoming sequel. You can check out the newly revealed image below:

The caption for the social media post also revealed a December 2024 release for the upcoming threequel. It reads, “Off and RUNNING. #SonicMovie3 Only in theatres December 20, 2024.” So it looks like the film is moving full steam ahead, with most of the team that made the first two films such a huge success for video game film adaptations.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic 2 still

Jeff Fowler is back in the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel, along with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Ben Schwartz once again voices the Blue Blur, Sonic the Hedgehog. Also returning from the first film are James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, and Neal McDonough.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie released in February 2020 shortly before the pandemic shutdowns was a box office success, making $148 million domestically and $319 million worldwide. The 2022 sequel did even better than the original, making $190 million domestically and $405 million worldwide. It also did slightly better with critics, scoring 69% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The new film will continue off the teaser epilogue from the second movie, revealing the secret government project, Project Shadow and Shadow the Hedgehog. Over the years, Shadow the Hedgehog has become the franchise’s most popular antiheroes, and he’s starred in his own spinoff video game. Shadow also appeared in the Sonic Boom animated series, voiced by Kirk Thornton, who voiced Shadow in multiple video game titles as well.

Besides Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount Pictures and SEGA are also working on a spinoff television series starring Knuckles, who was introduced in the second movie and voiced by Idris Elba. The TV series will once again star Elba as Knuckles, plus Adam Pally, who reprises his role from the films as the deputy sheriff Wade Whipple from the films. Other actors for the show include Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel.

It’s good to see that progress is being made on the sequel. Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a sequel that actually improved over the original, hopefully, that means Sonic the Hedgehog 3 can follow suit. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024. The Knuckles TV show will drop later on, and the show will stream exclusively on Paramount+.
