TRUE DETECTIVE Relocates to Wintry Alaska in Brand-New Season 4 Trailer

A new teaser for True Detective season 4 has been released. The new season comes out on HBO and Max on January 14.
True Detective Season 4

This week, HBO released the official trailer for the fourth season of True Detective, subtitled Night Country. In the new set of episodes, written and directed by Issa López, the anthology series has moved to wintry Alaska and found a new protagonist in Jodie Foster (who also executive produces). Here is the official synopsis for the new season:

‘When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.’

The fourth season, which will be six episodes long, debuts on Sunday, January 14, at 9 pm ET on HBO and will be available to stream on Max, in the US, and HBO Max, internationally, at the same time.

Besides Foster, the ensemble includes Kali Reis, Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, John Hawkes, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, June Thiele, Diane Benson, and Joel D. Montgrand.

LOOKING BACK AT THE HISTORY OF TRUE DETECTIVE

True Detective remains one of the best series debuts in HBO history, with its history-making first season that starred Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, and Michelle Monaghan back in 2014 — a landmark that, similar to Breaking Bad, proved that there was a lot for film actors to sink their teeth in with TV. Cary Fukunaga was the showrunner and director of that whole first season. Nic Pizzolatto wrote it, as well as the two subsequent seasons.

True Detective Season 2 came out the following year, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, but it wasn’t as critically acclaimed. The network then put the anthology series idea on ice, until Mahershala Ali came along to lead the third season, which came out in 2019.

The collaboration between Ali and Pizzolatto probably caused the former to ask the latter to help them out with Marvel’s Blade reboot, as the True Detective writer was one of the many scribes to go through that film’s revolving doors.

Jodie Foster True Detective

With Night Country, Jodie Foster will be starring in her first TV show since the 1970s, which should already tell you a lot about what to expect from the new season. The Silence of the Lambs actress is currently expected to get an Oscar nomination for her performance in Netflix’s NYAD. Should she get that, it would be her fifth Academy Award nomination, a list that already includes wins for The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs.

2024 Will Be Big for HBO and Max

Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service, released earlier this week a small teaser with sneak peeks at what to expect from their upcoming programming next two years. That included new footage from The Penguin and Welcome to Derry, the It prequel series that is expected to arrive in 2025.

It also included new looks at other highly-anticipated series like The Regime (led by Kate Winslet), The Sympathizer (from Park Chan-wook and Robert Downey Jr.), or The Franchise, a new comedy series from Sam Mendes about the making of a superhero movie.

But of course, the crown jewel will be the second season of House of the Dragon, which also debuted its first teaser trailer recently, promising a summer 2024 release window. New seasons of The Last of Us (which is set to start shooting on February 12), The White Lotus, and Euphoria will arrive in 2025.
