Now that the iteration of Mickey Mouse from his first appearance in Steamboat Willie has become a public-domain character, it looks like game developers are using the iconic cartoon character. Nightmare Forge Games revealed their new co-op survival horror game this week, Infestation 88, where players are investigating an infestation of deadly rats. However, they soon find something even more sinister.

It looks like the big monster hunting players in the game is a giant, monstrous version of Mickey Mouse based on his appearance from the original Mickey Mouse cartoon, “Steamboat Willie.” You can check out the reveal trailer for the game below:

In Infestation 88, the game blends horror with nostalgia, similar to the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey movie, which turned the characters of Winnie the Pooh into horror movie killers and monsters. The game uses a monstrous update of Mickey Mouse inspired by his first appearance in his debut cartoon short, “Steamboat Willie” from 1928.

In the upcoming game, players are playing as an exterminator trying to deal with sinister infestations. However, these infestations have a dark secret. They are being caused by twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends. Nightmare Forge Games’ official description hints that there might even be other twisted versions of familiar, classic characters. Since versions of Winnie the Pooh are also in the public domain, maybe they will also appear here, but that’s just speculation.

Speaking of the urban legend characters, another creature that appears to be in the screenshots looks like the Mothman, so that’s another example of creatures who will stalk players in the game. The game acts as a co-op, multiplayer, first-person shooter. It looks like players are stuck in a map where they are being hunted by a vicious monster.

Now that the classic debut short of the iconic Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, it should be interesting to see what other creations might come of that. This is only the start of the character being in the public domain.
