A recent and unexpected rumor suggests that the source code for Grand Theft Auto V and many more confidential files from Rockstar Games have leaked online. It’s unclear exactly how much of the GTA V source code is out there or how it’ll impact GTA 6’s development, but yet another security breach has reportedly hit Rockstar.

From the industry-wide layoffs to countless leaks, it’s been a rough year for gaming, and you’d have trouble finding a company hit harder than Rockstar. In late 2022, screenshots and videos from an early build of GTA 6 hit the internet, and things got worse in 2023 when hackers spoiled the developers’ grand reveal for the GTA 6 trailer, forcing Rockstar to premiere it early. If the rumors are true, the company has an even bigger battle ahead with the latest leak.

The GTA V Leak Could Be Severe

According to GTA Focal on X (formerly known as Twitter), hackers have a 200GB source file, including assets, 3D models from GTA V, and more confidential information. Allegedly, the hackers got their hands on the game’s source code during the 2022 GTA 6 leaks, holding on to it and passing it around behind the scenes. For unforeseen reasons, they kept part of the files private until late 2023, when they began uploading it online. It’s unclear whether or not the hackers have the full source code files for GTA V, as only a 4GB file hit the internet during the 2023 holidays, but rumors suggest they could.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, quickly scrubbed all links to the file off the internet. Other rumors suggest that the hackers are considering releasing the entire 200GB file, but it’s been about a month since these events occurred, and nothing has happened yet.

Allegedly, the leaked files didn’t only contain information from GTA 5 but also the long-awaited, unannounced Bully 2, samples of GTA 6, several unreleased DLCs, and a map from a canceled project called Agent

It remains to be seen whether or not the hackers will take any action with the GTA V source code, but the leak could be Rockstar’s worst yet. GTA Online immediately becomes a high-risk environment if they have all the files, threatening every player. With the source code, they could embed malware into the game or remotely hack into players’ systems.
