Guess what Moana fans? Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Moana 2 would be arriving this year. A sequel to the beloved 2016 film will arrive in theaters later this November.
During a surprise announcement, Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger confirmed that Moana 2 is on its way. “Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theaters this November.”
Moana was released back on November 23, 2016. It follows the story of a girl named Moana. She’s the daughter of Chief Tui, and she embarks on a journey to return the heart of the Goddess Te Fitti from Maui, a demigod, after the plants and the fish on her island start dying due to a blight. Moana 2 is Disney Animation’s all-new feature-length sequel to the 2016 Oscar-nominated film.
MOANA 2 ARRIVES IN THEATERS THIS NOVEMBER
The sequel will arrive in theaters on November 27, so save the dates on your calendar. Disney shared both a teaser for the movie, as well as a first look image (see above). You can check out the newly revealed announcement teaser video below:
Both Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Maui) and Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) are expected to reprise their role for the sequel. As well as Alan Tudyk (Heihei) and Pua. According to Buzzfeed, the voices made by Pua were from real pigs, and it was not by a human. It’s yet to be determined if this would also occur in the sequel. Pua seems to have a much bigger role in Moana 2 as seen from the first look image. We’ve also got a glimpse of some new characters, however, the voice actors for them are unknown at the moment.
A little under a year ago, Disney also announced a live-action reimagining of the hit film, which is expected to also star Johnson now portraying his role as Maui in a live-action motion picture format. The 2016 film was a sizable hit for Disney earning over $248 million domestically and over $687 million worldwide off of a $150 million budget.
The original feature was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements from a script by Jared Bush. The film featured original songs created by Mark Mancina, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Opetaia Foa’i. Per Disney, Mancina and Foa’i are back to create the music for the upcoming sequel, and they’ll be collaborating with Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.
