“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.
When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to July 2025.”

SUPERMAN will be the first theatrical release from the new DC Universe. The DC Extended Universe came to a close with the release of last year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which also brings to an end for Henry Cavill’s iteration of the character. In December 2022, Gunn tweeted an update on the Superman reboot by saying, “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about several exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
