The news comes hot off the heels of the hit show, Star Trek: Discovery, which recently debuted its own fifth and final season earlier this month on Paramount+. Both shows are produced by CBS Studios.

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS AND LOWER DECKS RECEIVE NEW SEASON PICKUPS

Lower Decks originally debuted on CBS All Access in August 2020. It’s had four seasons and 40 episodes so far. Provided it follows the 10-episode season format, the final season will take it to about 50 episodes. The show’s fifth and final season will debut later this fall on Paramount+.

The critically acclaimed Strange New Worlds, which has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, debuted on Paramount+ in May 2022. The spinoff of Discovery has run two seasons with 20 episodes so far. Season 3 of the hit show is currently in the works and expected to launch later next year.

Speaking on the shows getting season renewal, Paramount+ Programming EVP Jeff Grossman stated, “It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers.”

Grossman continued, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has found the perfect blend of action, adventure, and humor, and we’re elated to announce another season ahead of our season three premiere. Similarly, Star Trek: Lower Decks has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

CBS Studios President David Sapf added on the news, “Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are integral to the Star Trek franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds.” Stapf went on, “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and the cast, crews, and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

An original movie event in the works for Paramount+ also includes Section 31, starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh. The project recently wrapped production. Also, the new original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is set to begin production later this year.

Paramount+ and CBS Studios clearly have a lot of faith in the acclaimed Strange New Worlds, as the show has been renewed before Season 3 has even made it to air. The previous seasons of Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are streaming now on Paramount+. Season 4 will not air until after Season 3 has debuted and finished.
