It looks like Vin Diesel (xXx, Fast & Furious, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Iron Giant) is reviving his iconic role of Riddick for a highly anticipated, long-awaited fourth installment. Riddick: Furya was announced today by Rocket Science, and it will begin shooting across Europe later this year. This will be the first Riddick movie in over ten years, as the last movie, the aptly titled Riddick, was released back in 2013.

This will mark the fourth installment of the franchise, with the original film, Pitch Black, released in 2000. It was followed by the 2004 sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, followed by just Riddick in 2013. For years, there was talk of another film, titled Furya, that would see Riddick finally return to the home planet of his people, the Furyans. It looks like that sequel is finally coming to fruition.

According to an official press release from Rocket Science, the film will begin production on August 26, with shooting to commence in Germany, Spain, and the U.K. The sequel will see Diesel reprise his role as the stoic anti-hero, Richard B. Riddick, an escaped convict with the ability to see in the dark, who is wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.

Per the press release, the sequel will see the antihero finally return to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and fears might be left in ruins. After returning, he finds other Furyans, who are fighting for their existence against a new monster. Some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he ever could have imagined.

David Twohy, the longtime writer and director of the franchise, will once again helm the fourth installment. Diesel will star in and produce the sequel under his One Race Films banner alongside producer Samantha Vincent. Thorsten Schumacher with Rocket Science and Lars Sylvest for Thank You Studios are also producing the project alongside Joe Neurater.

Per the announcement, Rocket Science recently represented the international sales rights and has completed worldwide cornerstone pre-sales to the UK (yet to be announced), France (Metropolitan), Germany (Leonine), Spain and Latin America (Sun), Benelux (The Searchers), Poland (Kinoswiat), Canada (Elevation), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Portugal (Lusomundo), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), South Africa (Empire), Greece (Femeway), Middle East (Front Row), CIS and Baltic States (Volga), Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czech/Slovak, Republic Former Yugoslavia (ProRom), and Thailand (Sahamongkhol).

CAA Media Finance is representing the North American rights. Universal Pictures previously released the first three films in the franchise.

Diesel is best known for his work as Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise. The latest installment, Fast X, was released last year. He also voices Groot in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for the MCU. His other credits include Saving Private Ryan, xXx, and Bloodshot.

Besides the Riddick franchise, Twohy also wrote the Harrison Ford-starring thriller, The Fugitive. He also recently completed writing the financial thriller, Big Dogs, which is currently in the works by legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott. He also helmed the sci-fi horror film The Arrival, and the supernatural thriller, Below.

Riddick: Furya does not yet have an official release date. It should be interesting to see how this one pans out.
