Why You Can Bank on TWISTERS Being the Next Summer Blockbuster

In an age where people have grown tired of anything considered a reboot, Twisters may be the blockbuster to put an end to the fatigue.

You can hop on social media any day and see a flood of people in film Twitter (still not calling it X) express their utter distaste for reboots. Some even go as far as writing off sequels to classics the moment it is revealed without even giving it a chance. But every once in a while, a sequel to a fan favorite comes around and rocks the box office. Top Gun: Maverick is the perfect example, crossing the $1 billion mark 36 years after the release of the OG. Another notable accolade was that it surpassed Titanic to become Paramount Picture’s highest-grossing domestic film of all time.

In Twisters, the Glen Powell-led follow-up to the 1986 hit that starred the late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. Right off the bat, you’d think fans of the original would immediately swear it off, but you’d be wrong to make that assumption. It’s understood that technology has long advanced since the original donned the silver screen 28 years ago. With that being said, we can already expect the visuals, high-quality surround sound, and overall immersive realism of being in the presence of a tornado. Much more can be done with cinematography today which will definitely play into how successful this film will be.

It has the Recipe for a Summer Blockbuster

Locking in a summer blockbuster also needs another key ingredient: a great cast. As mentioned before, Powell will star alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and will be directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari). The film recently made an appearance a few days ago at CineEurope and treated the audience to an extended look. The Illuminerdi team was present back in April for CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the Twisters was well received by an audience filled of fans, theater execs, and journalists.

In addition to the excitement that exists with fans of the original and tornadoes in general, Powell has been drawing in viewers to projects he has recently attached himself to. You can’t stop by a single website without seeing a story about him, with his face currently plastered on a slew of magazines as of late.

He is being labeled as Hollywood’s new leading man (rightfully so) and is showing no signs of slowing down. He is charming, likable, talented, and has the looks of a movie star. His most recent project, Hit Man, was a huge success on Netflix and has garnered a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – one of the highest ever. These qualities are sure to play into filling seats in theaters worldwide come next month.

You can catch Twisters in theaters July 19th. Get your tickets here.
