Channing Tatum Wants to Make 23 JUMP STREET a Reality

Per a recent interview with ComicBook, Channing Tatum says he still wants to make 23 Jump Street with Jonah Hill, who is also interested.

Channing Tatum says he still wants to make 23 Jump Street, ten years after the release of 22 Jump Street. The hit sequel to 21 Jump Street, which was released on June 13, 2014, was a massive critical and commercial success. A third movie and several spinoffs, including one where the Men in Black met Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum), were heavily in the works but never came to fruition at Sony Pictures.

Despite this, Tatum says he still wants to make a sequel. During an interview with the actor and Scarlett Johansson for ComicBook.com on the Fly Me to the Moon press tour, Tatum says a script has already been written and is the best he’s ever read. Check out his full thoughts on the matter below:

CHANNING TATUM: There is a project that was written and it’s still the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON: What happened?

TATUM: It’s just a lot of bureaucracy, kind of above-the-line stuff. It’s really hard to get it made and we’ve been trying to get it done. You know what, I’m going to put some good juju out there and I’m going to say I would love to see 23 Jump Street. I would love to do it with Jonah, and Jonah I know wants to do it. We would love to just get to go play again.

It doesn’t appear that Sony Pictures has anything on top with the Jump Street franchise at the moment. 22 Jump Street was released in theaters 10 years ago in 2014. The film did well with both critics and commercially, scoring 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. It grossed $191 million at the domestic box office and $331 million worldwide.

23 Jump Street Deserves to Happen

Yes, it may be weird to say this, with the stars well into their forties, but the 21 Jump Street movies have never cared much for authenticity and made the stars’ ages part of their humor. Because of this, it’s a no-brainer for Sony to greenlight and hopefully produce 23 Jump Street, regardless of the time passed between the second and third film. As mentioned above, there were many attempts to continue the franchise, but none of them began filming.

The only one which might have happened was the aforementioned Men in Black/21 Jump Street crossover film, with Sony having hired The Muppets director James Bobin to helm the picture. Production was even slated to begin in 2016, but the project never happened and was subsequently canceled months later. There was also a female-centered 21 Jump Street project with Tiffany Haddish and Awkwafina cast in the picture, but nothing else has been heard since then and likely won’t.

Instead of focusing on spinoffs, Sony should get the gang back together for at least one more installment, which, if Tatum’s saying of the script’s quality is true, could be the best that the franchise will offer so far. It could also act as the perfect ‘closure’ to a trilogy of movies, should everyone be up for one final mission. In the meantime, you can check out Channing Tatum in his latest movie, Fly Me to the Moon, in theatres on July 12.
