Netflix has definitely brought out plenty of incredible true crime documentaries over the years, and Murder To Mercy appears to be no exception. This one tells the story of Cyntoia Brown, who was arrested for murdering the much older man who picked her up for sex, and it details the ethics behind her sentence.

Murder To Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story Official Synopsis

The official synopsis for the film is as follows:

In 2004, 16-year-old Cyntoia Denise Brown was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, for murdering a 43-year-old man who picked her up for sex. She was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison — Cyntoia’s fate seemed sealed. The film shows the complexity of a child who was the product of three generations of violence against women in her biological family. And how in 2019, after nearly 10 years of legal challenges, Governor Bill Haslam granted her request for clemency. He did so following a slow shift in the state for legislative change in juvenile sentencing laws and having seen evidence of her maturity, education, and good behavior as a prisoner.

The film was directed by Daniel H. Birman. Birman is known for directing a seven-part TV series called Sentencing Children in 2016, which also explored the details of Cyntoia Brown’s case.

The series is viewable on PBS’s website, if you want some more information on this crazy story before you watch Murder to Mercy on Netflix later this month.

Birman is also known for directed documentaries about Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, fighter pilot Bob Hoover, and motorcycle racer Leslie Porterfield.

I am personally pretty excited for this to come out, as I feel that this a very interesting change of pace for the true crime genre and can’t wait to see how everything pans out in the end.

Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story will be available on Netflix April 29.
