The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television (AMPTP) may have finally been resolved, but the actors union’s (SAG-AFTRA) dispute with the studios continues. When SAG-AFTRA declared its labor stoppage on July 14, it halted many major film productions in Hollywood, including Deadpool 3, which had not yet finished shooting. At the time, Marvel Studios was positioning the film for a May 2024 release date.
According to a new report from The Wrap, despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel Studios and Disney are still keeping Deadpool 3 on track for its May 2024 release date. However, depending on how much longer the strike goes, it does raise the question of how much longer Marvel and Disney can keep that current release period.

DISNEY & MARVEL KEEPING MAY 2024 RELEASE DATE FOR DEADPOOL 3
According to The Wrap’s report, the threequel is keeping the current release date of May 3, 2024, for now. Another major Marvel sequel in the works that’s on tap for next year is Captain America: Brave New World. That film managed to wrap its principal photography in early July, just days before SAG-AFTRA declared its work stoppage.
Speaking to The Wrap, an agent commented on how studios will be looking to fully resume production on films that were halted due to the strike. The anonymous individual stated, “The immediate priority for all studios is to get the movies that were shut down in mid-production up and running again.”
SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP recently resumed talks. The guild announced that negotiations would also continue as of Wednesday (Oct. 11). However a new contract or deal with the AMPTP has not been announced or reached as of yet.
As a result of the strike, 2024 might be a lighter year for Marvel Studios in terms of output due to the labor stoppages. Daredevil: Born Again. Was originally announced for an early 2024 release. With the issues currently plaguing that production, with Marvel firing the show’s executive producers, showrunners, and directors, it looks like Born Again’s production will be looking to start over from scratch.
A number of other productions were halted as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike as well. Some of those include Sony’s Venom 3, Gladiator 2, Beetlejuice 2 from Tim Burton and Warner Bros., and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 over at Paramount. And while late-night and daytime talk shows can resume production now, major scripted and acted television shows, with some exceptions, won’t be able to start or resume shooting until the SAG-AFTRA strike is finally resolved.
It should be interesting to see how things pan out for Deadpool 3, Marvel, and other studios next year. That will be when the effects of both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes will be more noticeable for upcoming releases. So, it may take a minute for studios to recover from that period as well.
Marvel’s Deadpool 3 will mark the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine/Logan. Ryan Reynolds is also back in the role of Wade Wilson/Deadpool. Shawn Levy directs from a script co-written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Reynolds, and Levy. While the release date might actually be up the in air, it’s still scheduled for a May 4, 2024 release.
