It looks like the TMNT are back on top of the world again. It’s hard to believe it’s 2024 and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is still on top and still chugging along 40 years from when Kevin Eastman and Fred Laird published the first issue of their indie, underground comic book series.
Now, the heroes in a half-shell are back on top following the box office success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and the IDW comic book series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution selling out its first printing run.

IDW Publishing announced this week that the TMNT: The Last Ronin graphic novel was the top-selling western graphic novel of last year. Now, the book’s sequel, TMNT: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution has made its debut out of the sewers and into comic shops. The book sold out its first printing run at 140,000 copies. Now, the book has received its second printing.
TMNT: THE LAST RONIN II – RE-EVOLUTION GETS SECOND PRINTING FROM IDW
The comic series features the original creative team of original TMNT creator Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, artists Esau and Isaac Escorza and Ben Bishop, colorist Luis Antonio Delgado, and letterer Shawn Lee. With the first issue’s orders going back 140,000 copies, a second printing run is now on its way.
IDW also confirmed that the second printing with a new cover by the Escorza brothers will be hitting stands on May 15. Fans will have until March 25 to pre-order the book at their local comic shop. You can get a look at the newly updated cover artwork below:
Speaking on the comic getting another printing run, writer Eastman stead, “The reaction to, and continued success of THE LAST RONIN series goes so far beyond anything we imagined at any time during the creation process… humbling is the best way to sum it up for me.” He continued, “The whole team just wanted to tell the best story we could. The fact we get to continue to tell more stories set in the TMNT Last Ronin Universe is another gift from the most incredible fans on the planet.”
IDW Editor-in-Chief Jamie S. Rich added on this week’s news via a press release, “We have a saying around IDW – ‘Never underestimate LAST RONIN.’ In addition to the numbers on this coming in higher than initial expectations, the fan reaction is once again through the roof. It’s just incredible how excited everyone is to see the incredible legacy of TMNT continued.” He added, “Forty years down the road, and Kevin Eastman still has the power to wow us!”
TMNT: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution Issue #1 is now on sale. The next issue is due out in comic shops on May 15.
