THE OFFICE New Series Lands Peacock Series Order, First Plot Details Revealed

Peacock has given a series order to a follow-up series to The Office, with Greg Daniels returning as co-showrunner. The first details have emerged.

Dunder Mifflin, step aside. The Office is coming back, but the setting will be entirely different this time. Peacock has given a series order to a new reboot/follow-up of the series from co-creators Greg Daniels (who was behind the Michael Scott version of the TV franchise) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You).

The series will star Domhnall Gleeson (About Time, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus season 2), and will now be set in the offices of a dying newspaper. Here is the official logline of the series, as revealed by the streamer:

“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

Production will begin in July, as NBCUniversal tries to capitalize on the renewed interest in the series, which earned a second life in the US thanks to Netflix around 2017-2018, and in international markets during the pandemic. An unofficial companion podcast from co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey titled Office Ladies was launched back in 2020, with others following soon after.

“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock. In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”

-Lisa Katz, President, NBCUniversal Entertainment

Universal Television will produce. It’s unclear, however, how many episodes it will include. The first season of the 2005 comedy included six episodes, but subsequent entries packed in 20+ episodes, which is a no-go in the streaming era. Comedies like Abbott Elementary are pushing the boundaries once again with 13-22 episodes per season, but that one airs on ABC as opposed to Hulu. Streaming spin-offs like How I Met Your Father capped off their episode totals at around 10 episodes per season.

Peacock has extremely high hopes for the series as it continues to justify its streaming ambitions to investors without many certified hits. Poker Face seems to be one of the few series they have that have actually left any cultural impact.

Earlier this year, the (five-time Oscar nominee) Annette Bening-Sam Neill-led Apples Never Fall barely even registered with the average viewer. But as Peacock tries to lure subscribers in through their sports offerings, a new iteration of The Office could finally break some ground for them.

The currently untitled spinoff of The Office series will debut on Peacock at a later date. It should be interesting to see what Daniels and Koman create for the mockumentary follow-up.
