With Ruby Rose departing the lead role in Batwoman, the next season will change the game in Gotham City on the CW.
Now with news that Kate Kane’s character will be written off the show, we can turn our attention to the new character that will take over the Bat-suit. The show will be looking for a new Batwoman and the character will be quite the change from Kane. We still don’t have an official confirmation on the new heroine’s identity or the overall story for the second season from the studio. Much less how they plan to pick up the threads from the season finale.
While speaking at ATX television festival, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries spoke about the decision of not recasting Kate Kane. Here is what she had to say:
“I did consider the soap opera version for a hot minute, selfishly, because we had a couple episodes already written, and transition-wise, it would be seamless [since] we already started breaking season 2,..But upon further reflection, and [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call—and he’s way smarter than me about this sort of stuff—he’s like, ‘You know, I think we should just reboot the character in terms of reboot Batwoman as a different character.’ Just to also respect everything that Ruby [Rose] put into the Kate Kane character.”

It’s interesting that Dries and Greg Berlanti found a new path to Batwoman. The decision to recast a new character, who’s name is rumored to be Ryan Wilder, as the next female to take the mantle is a good way for the show’s direction. The first season didn’t necessarily have blockbuster ratings, perhaps this Wilder character with a new story line will give the show a fresh boost for next season and beyond. Dries speaks about the introduction of the new Batwoman and what she hopes the new character will give fans. Here is what she said on the subject:
“I just think it helps the audience a little bit, too, that we’re not asking them to not address the elephant in the room. I’m inventing a whole new character. In her past, she was inspired by Batwoman. She is going to take on the mantle and is completely maybe not be the right person at the time to be doing it. That’s what makes it fun.”
The Near Future Possibilities of Batwoman
With the introduction of Ryan Wilder, it’s possible that we could see a time jump from the first season that could explain the disappearance of Kate Kane. The show will also have to decide whether they will continue with Kate’s father and sister story lines as well. There are a lot of directions for Dries to take the series at this point.
Creating a new character is quite the process and Dries is excited to create a superhero who will honor Kate Kane, while taking the opportunity to make brand a second Batwoman. Of course, this is not the only character in the Bat family to have someone new take the over mantle. For example, there were multiple Robins after Dick Grayson, with Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Carrie Kelley, and Damian Wayne. While Jean Paul Valley took over the role of Batman during the “Knightfall” saga in the comics. We have also seen the popularity of Terry Mcginnis who was chosen as the next Batman in the animated series, Batman Beyond.
