The Dark Knight rises once again! At least on the TV screen as The CW has found its new Batwoman.
That’s right, the new Caped Crusader on the rooftops of Gotham City will be played by Javicia Leslie. She will be taking over the role after the departure of Ruby Rose.
Javicia Leslie will be the first black woman to don the cape and cowl in DC history. Leslie will be making her debut as Ryan Wilder when the show’s second season is set to return to air in 2021. With the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to slow the return of television and Hollywood, it will only make the debut of Leslie’s character that much more exciting to see.

When learning the news, here is what Javicia Leslie had to say.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”

As noted, Javicia Leslie will be the first African-American bisexual woman to portray a member of the Bat Family on screen. We have seen in the comics many African-Americans enter the Bat Family, such as Batwing and The Symbol. But this new character will shatter the glass when she takes on the role for The CW. With the departure of Ruby Rose, the producers and directors decided not to recast someone to take the role of Kate Kane but give us a new hero who will defend the streets of Gotham City.

Here is the description of Ryan Wilder that was described in the official release of Javicia Leslie’s introduction.
“Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero.”
It looks like Berlanti Productions which produces Batwoman and the other DC shows on CW such as The Flash, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Legends of Tomorrow, is giving the viewers a Batwoman that will definitely stand out from Rose’s Kate Kane. This description shows that Wilder will be using the suit, and the mission, as perhaps a way to atone for her crimes and wild life before suiting up.

This news comes at a great time to help keep fans on a good note while they must wait for the new season. No new details have been made yet on how the role of Batwoman will be handed to Javicia Leslie’s character, but it seems when it does, her character will make a grand entrance.
