Star Trek Lower Decks Episode 1 Review – Second Contact

Star Trek Lower Decks boldly goes where no Star Trek series has gone before with its daring move to go into the adult animation genre and so far it seems to be working.

The series is created by Mike McMahan known for his work on Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites. As previously stated before the series is taking a much more comedic approach than its predecessor however the comedy manages to still goofy while still being faithful to the over 50 years of Star Trek lore that has come before it.

Star Trek Lower Decks follows the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in the Lower Decks division of the ship. The Lower Decks is where all of the odd-jobs of the ship are done, such as janitorial duties and small maintenance work. The series also features the bridge crew as side characters to the Lower Decks crew and also serves as sort of (for lack of a better term) antagonists for the LD crew.

Star Trek Lower Decks Is Off To A Surprisingly Great Start

The main plot involves a virus from another planet taking over the ship (timely isn’t it) which turns the crew into zombie-like creatures. The crew onboard has trouble gaining control over the other infected crew members. Meanwhile, the members of the away team Ensigns Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner are attacked by a spider creature. The creature puts Boimler his mouth and eventually spits him out leaving him covered in goo.

As it turns out this goo happens to be the cure to the virus the is infecting the crew. The bridge crew uses the goo to save the other crew members and give no credit to the Lower Decks crew that helped them, which seems to probably be a future recurring trend of the series.

Overall I enjoyed the episode. The series, so far, seems to be doing a good job with making a comedic show while also sticking true to the Star Trek lore. The characters are likable and the plot, while silly, is still enjoyable to watch and is not overbearing. I cannot wait to see what else the series will have in store as the show continues.

The first episode of Star Trek Lower Decks is currently available on CBS All Access.
