Unfortunately, Watchmen Season 2 Is Unlikely Without Damon Lindelof Attached

We an ominous report for those looking forward to a second season of HBO's Watchmen.
Ozymandias On Trial

People have been wondering if we’d be getting a Watchmen Season 2 since before the first season even aired. Show runner Damon Lindelof has been on the record several times now stating that he was not interested in continuing the show past the first season. He was happy to let HBO continue without him, but for him, the story he told in Season 1 was as far as he wanted to go.

We recently have gotten a confirmation via an interview with Casey Bloys at USA Today, that HBO would not continue the show without Lindelof being involved. Bloys told USA Today:

“It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do. If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a ‘Fargo,’ ‘True Detective’ (anthology) take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of ‘Watchmen,’ but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do.”

While later Bloys doesn’t rule out another season completely, he does say this:

“It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way.”

Will we get Watchmen Season 2?

If Lindelof has another idea for a second season later down the line, HBO would certainly be willing to revisit that world. However until, or unless, that happens it seems the first season will be the only one. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Do We Even Need a Second Season of Watchmen?

Audiences are used to getting one-and-done stories in the movies, but on TV, it’s not quite as common. Perhaps we’re shifting into an era where we’ll transition from a “mini-series” or “limited event,” to longer episodic stories that run for 10-13 episodes.

Would that be such a bad thing? In an era where sci-fi seems to do better on television and streaming services, perhaps this format would lend itself to more effective storytelling. Having a definitive beginning and end point makes it easier for the creatives behind the show to create a tighter story and finish the show on their own terms. While there’s been significant debate about the finale of Lost, for example, there should be no debate that they decided to end the show on their terms. As a result, the quality of the storytelling improved dramatically.

Are you happy with how HBO’s Watchmen ended? Would you rather get a Watchmen Season 2 and have the story continue? As an audience, how would you feel about seeing more “single season” shows? Let us know below!
