Actor Tim Allen has given us our first glimpse of Santa’s workspace in the upcoming series on Disney+, The Clauses, based on the Christmas comedy film The Santa Clause and its sequels.
The Santa Clause centers on Scott Calvin, an ordinary man who becomes the new Santa Claus after accidentally causing the original to fall from the roof on Christmas Eve. Legal stipulations are attached to the identity, requiring that whoever takes up the mantle give up their previous life and accept their new one as Santa Claus, complete with obligations such as behavior evaluations and gift distributions. Any succession of the position occurs when the current Santa retires or dies.

The Three Clauses of Santa Claus
Because of invoking the magical contract, Scott undergoes a physical and mental transformation as he is tasked with keeping the spirit of Christmas alive. During the first film, Scott must also repair his relationship with his ex-wife Laura to preserve visitation rights to their son Charlie. Laura and her husband Neil Miller stopped believing in Santa at a young age, and Scott has to prove to them that he is the real deal.

In the second film, an additional clause requires Scott to find a new wife to keep his job. If he does not accomplish this by next Christmas, he reverts to normal and loses his powers and identity as Santa Claus. As he seeks out a Mrs. Claus to maintain his role as the holiday herald, Scott tries to reconnect with Charlie after eight years of absence. Meanwhile, an animatronic Santa clone wreaks havoc at the North Pole as he imposes impossibly strict behavior standards while filling in for Scott’s absence.

The third film of The Santa Clause franchise reveals an Escape Clause, which allows the current Santa to rewrite the timeline to prevent the event that they agreed to the contract. Jack Frost, jealous of not having a holiday dedicated to him, exploits the Escape Clause to usurp Scott’s position and turn the North Pole into a commercialized and corporate dystopia. Scott has to restore the timeline and the spirit of Christmas, along with reconciling with his loved ones, to reclaim his title as Santa Claus and foil Frost.
The Santa Clause is Coming… Once More
16 years have passed since The Escape Clause, and 65-year-old Scott is well aware that he cannot be Santa forever. In the new series, Scott desires to return to the normal world and must find a worthy successor as he and his family prepare to leave the North Pole. Tim Allen reprises his role as Scott Calvin from the film trilogy, and also serves as executive producer for the series. Jack Burditt is also the executive producer and showrunner, having previously worked on Fraiser, Modern Family, and Last Man Standing, the latter of which Allen also starred in. Elizabeth Mitchell will also return from the second film as Carol Calvin/Mrs. Claus. New cast members include Elizabeth Allen-Dick, Austin Kane, Kal Penn, Rupali Redd, Devin Bright, and Matilda Lawler.
