The Marvel franchise is about to expand to the MGM+ and Prime Video family via a deal with Sony Pictures Television.
The first series that’ll be born of this new and interesting partnership is Silk: Spider Society. Already, Angela Kang, of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse fame, has been attached to the project as showrunner in a deal that will span several years. We can’t say we’re not excited.
What Does This Deal To Acquire Marvel Characters Mean For the Fandom?
On Friday, Nov. 18, it was announced that MGM+ and Prime Video have ordered a suite of live-action television series based on the Sony Pictures universe of Marvel characters. The acquired deal means that MGM+ and Prime Video now have access to over 900 characters in the Marvel comic.
It was also shared that Silk: Spider Society, produced by Sony Pictures Television, will be the first project to emerge from the multi-series agreement.
The series will premiere locally on MGM+’s linear channel and in more than 240 countries and territories globally through Prime Video.
Angela Kang, after acquiring a multi-year overall television deal with Marvel, has joined to serve as showrunner for Silk: Spider Society. She will be teaming up with Academy Award Winning producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, who will serve as executive producers on the new series.
“Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reimagining of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said. “Together with Angela Kang’s creative vision, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers.”
Kang also shared her excitement to have obtained the deal that will allow her to be involved in a number of projects.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios for this next chapter of my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive in to my first challenge—bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”
All We Know About Silk: Spider Society
Silk: Spider Society will be inspired by the Marvel comics and characters created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. The storyline will revolve around a Korean-American woman named Cindy, who gets bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker and turned him into Spider-Man.
In the original comics, Silk has a hard time learning to control her own version of spider-themed abilities and undergoes years of training. However, she is soon sent on the run by Morlun, a Multiversal villain that stalks all Spider-warriors.
The series is something that hits home for Kang, as a Korean-American woman who scaled the heights of Hollywood’s entertainment industry as a writer and producer to serve as showrunner for a number of hit movies, including The Walking Dead. Kang is also set to executive produce a currently untitled spinoff of Daryl.
Kang currently has a number of projects that she’s developing for different studios, along with managing her production company, Kang & Co Entertainment, which she launched in 2020.
