It looks like the Biker Mice From Mars are back in town, and the party is once again over for the bad guys. ComicBook.com reports that The Nacell Company, the studio behind the Netflix docuseries The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us, have picked up the rights to the 1990s animted series and toyline, with plans for an upcoming revival.
THE NACELLE COMPANY PLANNING REVIVAL OF THE BIKER MICE FROM MARS
According to the report, Nacelle is planning a new toyline featuring the characters, along with plans for a new animated series as well. Speaking to ComicBook.com on the news, Nacelle CEO Brian Volk-Weiss commented, “Biker Mice is the perfect way to start 2023 off with a Mars-based bang! And they’ll fit in,with their unique, creative brilliance, with the rest of brands we’ve recently acquired.”
The original syndicated animed series ran from 1993 to 1996 for three seasons and 65 episodes. The series followed a group of three anthropomorphic humanoid mice from Mars: Throttle (Rob Paulsen), Modo (Dorian Harewood), and Vinnie (Ian Ziering). Their planet was mostly destroyed and subjugated by the forces of the evil alien Plutarkians.
They eventually crashland on Earth and take the fight against to another Plutarkian, Lawrence Limburger, who has disguised himself as an American corporate CEO. Now the Biker Mice From Mars seek to protect Earth from being plundered and ransacked by Limburger as well.
A revival of the original series debuted in 2006, continuing events some years after the original animated show. Throttle, Modo, Vinnie, and their human friend Charley were back, but it featured the Biker Mice facing a group of new villains. Clancy Brown voiced a villain of a race of cat-like humanoids named Cataclysm. The revival ran for one season and only 28 episodes from 2006 to 2007.
Galoob produced the line of action figures for the original animated series in the 1990s. The show was clearly inspired by and cut from a similar cloth as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Since the heroes were these renegade freedom fighter bikers, they each rode their own motorcycle. The toyline also had the Biker Mice From Mars’ motorcycles, which could be powered by a ripcord feature.
Konami also published a video game based on the animated series for the Super Nintendo back in 1994. Marvel Comics also published a short-lived comic series as well.
This isn’t the only revival cartoon series The Nacelle Company is reportedly working on. Back in July 2021, Deadline reported that Nacelle signed a deal to revive the classic 1980s toy line and cartoon Silverhawks. The deal was a part of a collaborative partnership with Silverhawks rightsholder, Silverhawks LLC. Since the news was first announced, there hasn’t been much movement or details revealed on the upcoming revival.
However, if Nacelle manages to start putting these shows together, it could be quite the slate of action-adventure cartoon shows, which would be nice to see on television again. One thing Nacelle should at least consider is making all the episodes of the original 90s series and its 2006 revival available on streaming platforms. Currently, it’s very hard to get a hold of the original episodes or watch them online anywhere, other than YouTube bootlegs. Hopefully, this planned revival will have more success than the one for SWAT Kats.
One thing going against the planned revival of Biker Mice From Mars is that while it did have some decent success in the 1990s, it’s still a fairly obscure series, and it’s probably even more obscure in 2023. It certainly didn’t enjoy the level of success of a G.I. Joe or more similar contemporaries, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which received a steady stream of reboots and revival over the years. However, the relative obscurity of the property could also work in Nacelle Company’s favor and offer them more creative freedom.
There are no other details yet on the upcoming planned reboot of Biker Mice From Mars from Nacelle. When and how this gets off the ground ultimately remains to be seen. It will also be interesting to see if this new series will be a continuation of the original show from where the revival in the 2006 left off, or will be a completely brand-new reboot.
