Quantumania: Kevin Feige and Peyton Reed Discuss Creating Mind-Blowing Look of the Quantum Realm

Speaking at the press conference for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Kevin Feige and Peyton Reed discussed the process behind creating the quantum realm.

With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the Marvel Universe is getting to explore its next microcosm. We’ve been here before, but never like this — this is the Quantum Realm. During the press conference for the film, the makers of the upcoming Marvel Studios sequel revealed some of the insight behind the wondrous Quantum Realm, which will be showcased in the upcoming film.

CREATING THE QUANTUM REALM IN ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA

Speaking at the press conference for the film, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked about what influenced the team behind Quantumania when they were creating this whole new word. He said:

“Well, Peyton, I think we can talk a little more about that because it was in the works for three and a half years working on this look and taking audiences to a place that they have not been before. We’ve talked about parallels to The Wizard of Oz a lot in terms of taking and meeting of family down there. But the visuals, which you know, had been in the works for a very long time was all Peyton and his team.”

After Feige threw the ball to him, director Peyton Reed added the following:

“We have a number of things we looked at everything from electron microscope photography to things like Heavy Metal Magazine in the 70s and 80s, and We wanted to bring in all these elements like this, there’s a little sword and sorcery element. And then there’s a real like, you know, Mobius element to it. We just wanted to assemble a team of artists and say, we’re creating the Quantum Realm.

“You know, none of the other Marvel movies have really dealt with it. And we want to create this very vivid world that has its own internal history and internal logic. And, you know, who were the creatures there? Who were the people there? And how do you travel? What are the laws of physics? All these things needed to be figured out.

“So, we’ll take our production designer, we assembled this insane group of visual artists, and we said, just bring some of your most fantastic ideas to the table and let’s figure out what it can be because we want to take these characters that the audience has come to know and send them on this journey, and traverse these very strange lands and just have fun with it. It was it was a part of the MCU that we were free to create on our own and it was one of the most exciting things about it.”

Quantumania introduces a full-fledged science-fiction world

In an interview with Marvel.com, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania producer Stephen Broussard explained the quantum realm as follows:

“The Quantum Realm is just as big an idea as any of the things in any of the other worlds we’ve explored in the MCU to date,” Producer Stephen Broussard explains. “It’s a world unto itself not unlike Asgard or Wakanda or the world of the mystic arts in Doctor Strange. Getting the chance to establish something that big, and that big in part three of a film has been really, really fun”

Added writer Jeff Loveness:

“We really wanted to build it from the ground up and we thought how do we make this different from just outer space, how do we make this different from underwater like Namor’s kingdom Talokan?” Loveness explains. “We came up with [the idea] that basically it’s like the basement of the Multiverse. It’s this connected limbo outside of space and time.”

With the Ant-Man threequel, Marvel is doing something quite interesting. The Quantum Realm and its mind-bending rules contained the loopholes that the Avengers found to defeat Thanos during Avengers: Endgame. It was briefly introduced in the first Ant-Man, and then Ant-Man and The Wasp was the first time we spent more than a couple of seconds in the quantum subatomic realm.

Now, Marvel Studios is building off of everything that came before and using Endgame’s story device to introduce the next big bad of the MCU. It’s almost as if the Quantum Realm was the baton to be handed between both main antagonists, the direct link between both sagas.

Audiences will get to explore it for themselves when Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania opens in theaters on Feb. 17. What do you make of the filmmakers’ comments?
