Anthony Daniels has shared his thoughts on C-3PO, and Star Wars fans everywhere are eager to listen.
It’s been a few months since the final installment to the most recent Star Wars Trilogy came to a close with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Since then, fans have continued to debate and discuss the trilogy and the franchise as a whole. Whether they loved it or hated it, fans are always eager for behind-the-scenes information. Recently it was revealed that C3PO originally had a much larger role in the final movie.
When asked about his response to C3PO essentially being rebooted, Anthony Daniels (beloved actor of the droid) responded:
“Poor guy, he is messed around right from the beginning. Getting his arm torn off in the first one, being blown up in the second. Did he stay complete in the third one, I can’t remember. He’s just so mucked about with. I was just so thrilled that J.J. (Abrams) and the writer for Rise of Skywalker, finally came up with something really worthwhile.”

Anthony Daniels On Saying Farewell To The Beloved Droid
Who could forget the emotional scene where C3PO was saying goodbye to his friends? Fittingly, Daniels was asked if “saying goodbye to my friends” was how he approached the film. Daniels answered:
“Oh very much so. You also have to realize there’s an awful lot of editing after you finish filming, CP3O’s role was even sweeter and broader than that. Some of those niceties have to go because there’s so much in that film already, it’s almost two films in one, as you know. So I’m a little sad about that, particularly his relationship with Poe, played by the wonderful Oscar Isaac, that was just so sweet and so funny. […] That line, ‘Taking one last look sir, at my friends,’ even on the set I was moved by that.”
Of course, this might be the question asked of every actor in a beloved franchise, and Anthony Daniels was no different. When asked if Rise of Skywalker was the last we would see of C3PO, Daniels answered:
“I think probably the last, I mean what do I know, but the last in a big movie, the story of Skywalker. And quite right that it should end there. Let’s have another story with other characters, fresh parts of the galaxy. Plenty of galaxy yet to be explored. Who knows where other writers and producers will take it, but possibly without C3PO.”
On one hand, Daniels may be right, and it would be better to let C3PO have some well-deserved rest as new characters seek out adventures in the galaxy. However, on the other hand, fans would likely still enjoy seeing the droid in other stories to come.
