According to a new report, fan-favorite Luke Skywalker is presently being cast to appear in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series.
It has been a successful launch for the new Disney+ streaming service, with millions of subscribers already on board and a library of content in various stages of production. The Mandalorian just aired its series finale to large praise, while casting is currently underway for the second Star Wars series in the pipeline, focused on Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor.
Earlier this year at the D23 Expo, LucasFilm announced its intentions to produce a new prequel series based on the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Studio head Kathleen Kennedy was joined on stage by actor Ewan McGregor, who enthusiastically confirmed his return to the role in the upcoming show.
Catherine Chow (The Mandalorian) is set as director and showrunner with head writer, Hossein Amini, handling the scripting duties for the series. The story details have largely been left to speculation, but now a new piece of information has surfaced that should raise the antennae of Star Wars fans.
According to a scoop by Daniel Richtman via LRM, the production is currently casting for an actor to portray a young Luke Skywalker to join the cast of the untitled Obi-Wan show. There has been a multitude of rumors and theories about what to expect in the upcoming series, but this is the first solid indication of the direction for the series.
The Adventures of Young Luke Skywalker
The series is set to take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, where there are decades of story opportunities to explore. In A New Hope, Luke is aware of the “hermit” who lives a mysterious existence on Tatooine. It’s clear that Luke doesn’t remember meeting Obi-Wan. However, that certainly doesn’t mean that they have never met.
It could be that Luke was simply too young to remember their encounters, or that Obi-Wan the master Jedi ensured he wouldn’t remember them. It could be equally interesting to have a sub-plot featuring Obi-Wan protecting Luke, the future of the Jedi, without him being aware of the dangers at bay.
The Obi-Wan series has the potential to have more inter-connectivity and familiar cameos than perhaps any of the series preceding it. It will be fun to discover what other characters, ranging from Joel Edgerton’s Uncle Lars to Darth Maul, could be making an appearance in the show. We will be sure to keep our ears to the ground as there is surely more news to come soon from that galaxy far, far away.
