The next trailer for Marvel’s The New Mutants will debut on January 6th, 2020.
X-Men fans have had a rocky few years at the movies. Their former home at 20th Century Fox was a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. The franchise garnered critical acclaim with films like X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool, and Logan. However, in more recent times, the franchise has reached new lows with releases such as X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, both of which failed at the box-office and disappointed the core fan base.
Earlier this year, Disney completed its acquisition of Fox Studios and in the process acquired all of their cinematic assets, including the keys to the X-Men universe. While the core X-Men story was completed with Dark Phoenix, it has been hard to overlook the absence of their spin-off film, The New Mutants.
The film, directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), was filmed in Boston in 2017. Fans got their first look at a teaser trailer later that year, but that was at far as it went. Behind-the-scenes production problems plagued the film before the Fox-Disney merger, and speculation ran rampant that the film may never be released or else that it may be pushed onto their Disney+ streaming service. Eventually, Disney oversaw further reshoots and it has been assumed that the film was retrofitted into Disney’s sprawling continuity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Yesterday, fans got a much anticipated announcement from the film’s director via his Instagram. According to the director, the public will get its next look at the revamped X-Men property in a new trailer to be released on January 6th, 2020.
The New Mutants On The Block
The New Mutants follows a group of teens with special – and sometimes horrific – powers who are being held in secret facility. The film was previously thought to be a loose adaptation of the “Demon Bear” story line from the comics, in which a supernatural force torments the teens. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass) as Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (Another Life) as Danielle Moonstar, and Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf) as Sunspot.
There have not been many definitive reports on why the film will be released more than two years after movie posters were spotted in theaters. However, it’s been assumed that the most recent set of reshoots for the film was designed to remove the connections from Fox’s X-Men franchise and to fit the film’s story and characters into the current MCU continuity.
While Doctor Strange ind the Multiverse of Madness has been touted as the Marvel’s first horror-inspired release, that may no longer be the case. The New Mutants has long been conceived as a film inspired by teenage horror romps, simply set within the confines of the world of X-Men mutants. The world of fandom will get the opportunity to be reintroduced to the property on January 6th, 2020, while the movie is set to be released in theaters on April 3rd, 2020.
