20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment have released the brand new trailer for the upcoming mutant horror film, The New Mutants.
It has been a long and circuitous route to the theater for director Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. His film was one of the last of Fox’s X-Men projects – along with Dark Phoenix – that got caught in limbo when Disney acquired the entire studio. There was feverish speculation that the film would never see the light of day, or the darkness of a movie theater, but it seems that long-awaited day is coming after all.
Over the past weekend, Boone gave more clarification to curious fans about the upcoming film’s anticipated rating. It was always clear that the tone of The New Mutants would be dark and moody, which led many to think that it would follow in the tradition of other X-Men films such as Logan and Deadpool, with a R-rating. However, it will stay within the PG-13 parameters, while still not losing the chills that many are expecting.
Today the official trailer for the film debuted, and it looks like it will leave fans much to talk about. Check it out:
The New Mutants From Page to Screen
The trailer shows off the main cast of characters, including Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Alice Braga as Dr. Cecelia Reyes, Blu Hunt as Mirage, and Henry Zaga as Sunspot. It’s hard to not appreciate how comic book accurate the cast is, particularly Maisie William’s Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Magik. It’s as if they literally jumped out of the pages of Marvel Comics, complete with their respective sideburns and Soulsword. It seems possible that New Mutants is indeed a soft introduction into the world of mutants in the MCU. If this is even technically in the MCU, that is.
The absence of a Marvel Entertainment banner at the beginning of the trailer is glaring. It could be that since the film is released under the 20th Century banner, that Disney is simply hedging their bets. If the movie is a bomb, it was an old Fox project that was never going to work. If New Mutants turns out to be a surprise hit, then it’s possible to shoehorn it into the greater Marvel cinematic universe. Because after the Snap, anything is possible. Everyone knows that…
It’s clear that the film’s delayed release has resulted in a movie that’s steeped in horror, but still has the comic book elements that people associate with the Marvel Comics’ property. In the trailer, we get a our first glimpse of Demon Bear, a psychic foe who is capable of possessing people and changing an individual’s reality. It looks like we will be getting our first superhero movie, set in the world of Nightmare on Elm Street, which sounds like a winning pitch over here.
Official Synopsis: 20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
The New Mutants opens in theaters on April 3rd, 2020.
