Karen Gillan has had a great 2019, and she has an exciting line-up of projects that will soon be released. She, of course, will be returning to reprise her role as Nebula in both Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Disney+’s anticipated series What If…? – both coming out in 2021. However when asked about a “what if” situation during a recent interview, Karen Gillan expressed interest in playing a character in different superhero universe: Barbara Gordon.
“Batgirl would be pretty cool!” she said, before playfully adding “Yeah, she’s a redhead.” Gillan went on to express admiration for the Dark Knight Trilogy. She continued by saying “I just love the way that was directed so much, so I would love to work in that kind of world as the director.”
Karen Gillan has already proven herself to be a competent director with the film The Party’s Just Beginning, which came out in 2018. It was an impressive feat by Gillan, who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie. Her work in the Jumanji and Marvel movies also prove that she’s more than capable of leading an action-packed venture, and it seems that someone noteworthy has noticed as well.

Karen Gillan Is Author-Approved
Gail Simone has chimed in on Twitter to offer support for a Karen-Gillan-as-Barbara-Gordon film. Gail Simone is a comic book writer for DC Comics, and some of her most notable works include writing for Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman, and of course Batgirl. Being the person who writes the character on a regular basis, it seems that Simone would be someone qualified to throw in her two cents on who should play her.
It is important to note here that there aren’t any current developments on the status of the Batgirl movie at Warner Bros., but it would be interesting to see Gillan as Batgirl. Barbara Gordon has normally been portrayed as either a young teen or a young adult in her early twenties. It would be an interesting and refreshing take to see a more mature Barbara. An older Barbara would also fit into Gillan’s desire to create a Dark Knight-esque tone for a Batgirl movie. Gillan has already shown a wide range and depth to her acting skills, and a dark Batgirl seems like it would be a fantastic move.
Even though there will be plenty of waiting before any news of a Batgirl movie, there will be plenty to look forward to see from Karen Gillan. Until then, it’s still fun to imagine a kick-ass Barbara Gordon played by Gillan.
