Disney and Marvel Studios breezily confirmed at San Diego Comic Con 2019 that a sequel to Carol Danvers’ highly successful origin film, which would naturally be called Captain Marvel 2, was something they certainly had in the pipeline. They gave no other details beyond that, but they have now officially stated that the anticipated sequel is now in the works and will be arriving in 2022. However, some things will be different this time around.
Firstly, a new writer is being brought on board to pen the script for the project. Said writer is WandaVision scribe Megan McDonnell. Clearly Disney and Marvel Studios are very impressed with the work McDonnell has produced with WandaVision, as they are not only handing her a sequel to a billion dollar movie but also moving up the release date of the upcoming Disney+ series from 2021 to late 2020.

It was also confirmed that the directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson) who directed the first film will not be returning to direct the sequel. However it has been suggested that they are still in talks with Marvel Studios to perhaps direct upcoming projects for Disney +.
With the departure of Boden and Fleck, Marvel Studios have announced that they are on the search for a talented female director to helm the project. Currently there have been no names thrown around by the studio themselves, however that has not stopped fans from suggesting names such as Katheryn Bigelow, Deborah Chow and even Greta Gerwig as potential candidates to sit in the director’s chair.
Changes In Captain Marvel 2
We don’t have any plot details for the sequel quite yet, but we do know that the movie will be moving from the 90s to the modern day following the events of Avengers: Endgame. We also have learned that the film will be releasing at some point in 2022, meaning that the film will be coming out the same year as another huge Marvel sequel juggernaut; Black Panther 2.
The 2022 release date could also potentially help the show tie into the Ms Marvel series that is coming to Disney + in a seemingly similar release window.
