The age of reboots continues onward even though this time of the pandemic. The latest show to come back to the TV screens is Doogie Howser, M.D. The hit show on ABC from the 80’s and early 90’s starred NPH himself, Neil Patrick Harris, as a young medical prodigy at the age of fourteen.

The show’s reboot is being launched by Kourtney Kang, a writer and producer who has worked on such shows as Fresh Off The Boat and How I Met Your Mother. The show has the working title of Doogie Keahloha M.D. and is being developed as a new series for the Disney Plus streaming service.

The Next Doogie Howser

Deadline broke the story and shared the premise of the upcoming reboot. The show will follow a half-Asian, half-white 16-year old named Doogie Kealoha who is a new. prodigy physician in the field. The series seems to have a similar trajectory of the original Doogie Howser M.D., in which the teenage doctor had to balance the challenging profession, with the inevitable obstacles of adolescence. The show was such a large pop culture hit, that to this day “Doogie Howser” is a term for young experts in different fields.

Kang will also serve as an executive producer and will bring her own cultural background and history into the show. As she was born in Hawaii and also has a mixed cultural heritage. This should give the show a fresh perspective and it’s always positive to bring more characters of color the screen.

Doogie Keahloha M.D. will also bring Jesse and Danya Bochco as EP’s. These two have a connection to the original producer Steven Bochco, creator of Hill Street Blues and LA Law, as they are his son and his widow.
