The future looks very bright for Dan Harmon’s beloved sitcom, Community. The series, which originally ran for six seasons from 2009-2015, has seen a massive boost in popularity since recently arriving on Netflix.

As seen above, The Illuminerdi previously noted the possibility based on its newfound boost in pop culture. Now it seems those dreams of “six seasons and a movie” are becoming a reality.
Dan Harmon To Community‘s Rescue
According to Harmon, the increased viewership hasn’t gone unnoticed by the higher powers, who could make the long-awaited Community movie into a reality. He said the following in a recent interview with TheWrap:
“I can tell people for sure that the enthusiasm for Community both for all of this time and the resurgence of it [on Netflix], there’s always an aspect of that affects the marketplace. And when the marketplace gets affected, conversations happen. And when conversations happen, things happen. I mean, when you’re part of the Community family, you learn never to raise expectations, keep ‘em nice and low and then be pleasantly surprised. So I can say that there are conversations happening that people would want to be happening and that I’m very, very excited about the coming months.”
While this is far from official confirmation, it’s another step in the right direction for this magnificent franchise. The #sixseasonsandamovie movement has been building a lot of steam lately, and if Harmon’s word is to be trusted, the train’s not slowing down anytime soon.
A fan made Community set is taking the Lego community by storm, garnering the support of Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley on the show. In its current state, it’s proven more popular than sets for Friends and The Big Bang Theory at the same point in their brick development.
The Russo Brothers confirmed their interest in working on the Community movie with Dan Harmon in a Collider interview. Before directing blockbusters for Marvel Studios, the brothers directed several episodes of Community.
“We’d certainly be willing to do it. We love our Community family. That cast, we’re all still very close to all of them. It’d certainly be schedule-depending for us. But I believe there will be a Community movie, especially now that it’s doing so well on streaming. Someone like Netflix could step up and make that movie.”
The Russo Brothers are some of the most sought after directors in Hollywood, and if they were attached to the project, it’s guaranteed to bolster the film’s chances of release.
Additionally, Donald Glover is joining the cast for a Community table read and Q&A on Monday, May 18 at 2pm PT. This marks the first time that Glover has participated in an official Community event since leaving the show during its fifth season. As the biggest name attached to the series, his potential involvement in a Community movie would bring a great deal of starpower to the table, something that would undoubtedly get the attention of Sony executives.
The stars are aligning, and as we’ve said before, now is the perfect time to release the film. The fans have been waiting for the movie part of #sixseasonsandamovie to be realized for years. The cast and crew have fought to make this happen for just as long. The world wants the Community movie, and according to Dan Harmon, we may finally get it.
As Abed would say, Cool. Cool cool cool.
