Naughty Dog’s iconic game franchise The Last Of Us has been greenlit for its full first season by HBO.

HBO just announced that they have given a full series order of the popular video game franchise, The Last Of Us Game and franchise creator Neil Druckmann has teamed up with Craig Mazin creator of the hit Chernobyl series to bring the iconic video game franchise to three-dimensional life. This project will also include Game Of Thrones executive producer Carolyn Strauss.

The Last of Us will be a Sony Pictures Television co-production. The series will also be associated with Word Games, Playstation Productions, and franchise company creator Naughty Dog. So far HBO has not announced how many episodes they ordered, although we can assume that the series will not be short due to the game’s expansive story arcs.

The Last of Us Raises The Bar

The Last Of Us produced two of the most successful games in industry history and raised the bar for the survival horror genre. The first game was released on the Playstation 3 in 2013 and was later upgraded and enhanced for Playstation 4 consoles.

The first game was hugely successful and gained critical acclaim. The Last Of Us is considered one of the greatest video games ever made and helped Naughty Dog become a powerhouse in the gaming history. While this year’s The Last of Us 2 has broken multiple sales records and most recently received ten nominations at The Game Awards. However fans were mixed to negative about the plot and story of the sequel.

The plot of the first The Last Of Us deals with two characters named Joel and Ellie as they travel across a post apocalyptic United States. The story is set twenty years after the modern world was ravaged by a virus that turned victims into mindless zombies, called “The Infected.” Joel is a hardened survivor that has been hired from a rebel group called the Fireflies to smuggle a teenage girl named Ellie.

We later find out that Ellie is immune to the virus and Joel is tasked with taking her across the United States to another Fireflies faction in hopes of finding a potential cure for humankind within her DNA. What starts as a small job for Joel becomes a journey that is brutal and heartbreaking. But the loving bond between Joel and Ellie is what keeps them going and surviving.

The planned The Last Of Us TV series is huge for the video game industry. Its a prime opportunity to show that video games have great stories and compelling characters that can be adapted into other media. Fans can expect a bright future for The Last Of Us franchise as the development team of this project looks promising. So far HBO has not released a potential release date or casting news as it just broke ground. It’s safe to say we will see a lot of adventures featuring Joel and Ellie in the future.
