Crunchyroll, the popular Anime streaming service, has seen huge growth this year as they reach their 4 million subscriber milestone. This comes to a huge surprise to many as only last year they were celebrating their 3 million subscriber milestone and then reached their new milestone after only 6 months.

Its shocking to see such growth, but this also shows just how popular anime has become within such a small window of time. This growth does also allow greater growth to anime productions in the future too, so hopefully many shows will benefit as they progress.

This especially includes various anime that are specifically targeted at adults and young adults instead of anime designed for kids on popular network channels.

Crunchyroll General Manager Joanne Waage stated:

“For more than a decade, through anime and anime-inspired Originals, Crunchyroll has been leading the charge for the popularization of adult dramatic animation and we are fast becoming the epicentre for the next generation of animation fans, as is evidenced by our incredible growth in registered users and subscribers.

This milestone has been met with more than just celebration. The company has also announced a brand-new animated series that is created by Idris and Sabrina Elba. The new anime in development is currently named under the working title, Dantai. This name may change during the creation and release of this anticipated production. Joanne Waage also commented on the new project in development.

“Gens Y and Z have experienced superhero fatigue and are hungry for the new stories and ideas that our creators tell. This development deal with Sabrina and Idris Elba is another example of how we’re working with best-in-class partners to bring in new audiences and tell fresh and compelling stories through a medium that transcends genres and generations.”

Sarah Victor, Crunchyroll Head of Development, also made a statement regarding the new series in development.

“We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Idris and Sabrina to develop this anime-inspired sci-fi epic, it is a privilege to work with such talented, creative partners and we look forward to bringing this exciting project to life.”

Some fans may be surprised to hear that the Elbas are also huge fans of the genre and expressed their interest by saying,

“We’re really excited to be announcing this deal on our first anime. We’re both fans of the genre and see a huge opportunity to create something unique for a powerhouse like Crunchyroll. The story of ‘Dantai’ is our first collaboration as producers together and is one that is close to our hearts.”

It’s rare to hear of such an interesting project in development but fan will have to wait patiently since it may be a long time before Dantai (Working title) is close to release. However, there is so much content on Crunchyroll to enjoy, such as That Time I was Reincarnated as a Slime, Dr Stone, and others shows beyond them but also, Gods of High-school and other various Crunchyroll original shows. It’s a great opportunity to Subscribe to Crunchyroll in order to enjoy the range of content they possess.

Long time fan of Tokusatsu fan since Power Rangers was first released in the 90s. Whereas most Superhero fans grew up with DC Comics and Marvel, my childhood was surrounded by releases from Saban Entertainment such as Beetleborgs, along with anime, and other various fads of the generation. Anime is also a great passion with Digimon, That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime, and Demon Slayer being significant favorites. It was the love of both Power Rangers and Digimon that led to the path of becoming a Senior Writer for The Illuminerdi.
