Our sources have shared a bit more casting news and this time it will surely cause celebration among fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender. While the character of Katara was initially described as age 16 for the live-action adaptation she is now listed as 14 and Sokka who was 14 is now 16. Many fans of the original animated series were upset about the switch so this new information is exciting for a number of reasons.
It seems like the creatives working on the live-action adaptation paid attention to the fans and heard their concerns. With Sokka once again the older sibling at 16, instead of 15 like the animated series, and Katara as his younger sister at 14, the dynamic could be closer to what many fans are hoping for. The Illuminerdi can also report that casting is looking for East Asian or South Asian actors to portray Aang and Prince Zuko as well as Native American actors to play Sokka and Katara.

The Last Airbender live-action movie is despised by fans and critics alike with a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score of 5%. One of the major complaints even before the film was released was that the cast of the film was whitewashed and with this casting information, it looks like that will not be the case with the Netflix reimagining of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER LEGACY CONTINUES
It is no surprise that Netflix wants to dive into the beloved world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, given the fact that when the animated series was added to the streaming giant in May 2020, it skyrocketed to be the #1 series in only four days and held that position from May 14-May 21. Avatar: The Last Airbender broke records by holding a position in Netflix’s top ten series list for 60 days and was the most streamed children’s series on Netflix in 2020.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is an expansive franchise that began with the three season animated Nickelodeon series that ran from 2005-2008. Avatar: The Last Airbender has grown to include not only a sequel series with The Legend of Korra, but tie in novels, comics, and a video game as well.
And with not only the live-action Netflix series, but the Avatar Studios creating new series and features as part of the universe as well. Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to expand and although the animated series original creators left Netflix’s live-action adaptation due to creative differences, they are still very involved in the franchise with Avatar Studios.
Avatar: The Last Airbender fans have had a lot to celebrate with Nickelodeon launching Avatar Studios and the animated series executive producers and creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, serving as co-chief creative officers of the studio. The first project that Avatar Studios announced is an animated theatrical film. And with the news that Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action adaptation will have Sokka as Katara’s older brother like the animated series there is even more to be excited about.
