Kevin Feige teases what’s next for the leader of the revengers after Thor: Love and Thunder.
Thor: Love and Thunder is almost here! After the events of the “Infinity Saga” Thor is retiring and on a quest for inner peace. That is until his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer. If the initial reactions are to be believed, Chris Hemsworth’s fourth solo film as Thor Odinson is the best yet. Despite being one of the shorter movies from Marvel Studios, Hemsworth, Taika Waititi, Tessa Thompson, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the returning Natalie Portman, are being praised for their performances, the direction of the film, and overall enjoyment. Fans can see it for themselves on July 8, 2022, tickets are available now.
After the premiere of Thor: Love and Thunder, the team behind the film held a press conference where they answered some of the most pressing questions the media and fans had for them individually, for the film, and for Marvel Studios as a whole. And after such critical praise coming from the initial reactions, Thor’s long and ingrained presence in the entire MCU, it is natural to wonder what the future holds for the character. The President of Marvel Studios answers the questions and gives the world a hint of what the future holds for the God of Thunder and where fans can look to get an idea.

There are these things called comic books, that have a lot of stories in them. And that’s where all our stories come from. And the question, “Have you told all the great Thor stories in comics in movies?” The answer is, “No, there are lots of them.” I’ve always said, our interest in making additional stories is somewhat about continuing the character – it’s almost entirely about continuing the experience with the actor. I think of all of our cast, not as their individual characters, but as the Marvel players who within that character can grow and evolve and change.
And if we look at the comics as our guide, there are plenty of incarnations of Thor we have yet to see.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios
Feige gives a very hopeful, yet very vague answer. While he acknowledges the performer, he also is not specific about which performer. He also geniusly includes “iterations of the character,” which this film has done since its announcement. There are no indications of Hemsworth retiring from the role anytime soon, the comics and this latest film have made it abundantly clear that there can and are other Thors. The incantation on Mjolnir has always had that embedded, “Whosoever holds this hammer, if (s)he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”

Kevin Feige masterfully lets us know that there is a future for the God of Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and gives us hope that one, or both, of the current performers and bearers of the mantle. However, he also makes it very clear that the mantle is not limited to a performer and there are decades worth of stories for the character across numerous iterations. Which is highly established in the comic books. Hemsworth and Portman aren’t guaranteed to be the future of the character, but if they continue to give them fulfilling stories and challenges, there does not seem to be any reason to count them out.
